  2. Mission • Mission is to encourage and support students from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented populations to explore STEM careers • Established through a partnership between Normandale Community College and the Normandale Foundation in the Fall of 2007

  3. Careers • Career majors may include engineering, pharmacy, biology, K-12 math and science education, ….

  5. Recruitment • Students of color • Immigrants • Students of immigrant parents • Students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds • First generation college students • Female students • interested in STEM fields

  7. Cohorts • Admits a cohort of 30 students each academic year. • Students must have a competitive high school or college GPA and have shown success in a previous STEM courses either in high school or college • Two current letters of • recommendation

  8. Scholarships • Scholarships of up to $3,000 in tuition support per year • State and Federal Grants • National Science Foundation grant • Scholarships are funded through the Foundation

  9. Mentors • The Mentor’s primary function is to provide each student with academic and personal support • Each student takes a series of courses delivered by the Mentor • The Academy Mentors established relationships with advisors at the University of Minnesota They also have ties with at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

  10. Requirements • Enrolled at Normandale full time for the duration of the two-year Academy program • Attend all required Academy meetings and events • maintain a 3.5 GPA

  11. Signs of Success • Fifteen students have transferred to 4-year institutions. • Eight Academy participants were accepted into the University of Minnesota/Mayo Future Doctor’s program • Two Internships

  12. Signs of Success • Two program participants earned state and national ranking in the AMATYC (American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges)

  13. Signs of Success Callistus N Ditah was awarded the 2009 Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship

  14. Academy of Math and Science In Spring 2009, the Academy won the MnSCU Academic and Student Affairs Awards Award for the Excellence in Curriculum Programming
