  2. VCCS Reengineering Task Force Initiated in 2009 to “rethink” how Virginia’s community colleges can serve students better, reduce costs, & enhance productivity

VCCS Reengineering Task Force • Leverage the size of the 280,000 student system to gain economies of scale • Use technology to improve access, enhance student learning and reduce costs • Redesign educational programs and services to produce better outcomes at less cost for students and families

  4. VCCS Reengineering Task Force Leverage the size of 280,000 student system to gain economies of scale Aggregate procurements to drive down purchasing costs & gain better prices Consolidate “back office” operations in areas like financial aid processing

  5. VCCS Reengineering Task Force Use technology to improve access, enhance student learning & reduce costs • Create a state-wide distance learning network • Use open source learning materials as an alternative to expensive textbooks

  6. VCCS Reengineering Task Force Redesign educational programs & services • Overhaul developmental education to improve student success & reduce time required to remediate deficiencies • Conduct an “academic audit” of degree programs to reduce unnecessary requirements & costs

  7. VCCS Reengineering Task Force More than $10 million saved over 3 years by eliminating unnecessary degree requirements $300,000 saved by students using open source learning materials this fall semester Results
