  2. India Market Summary • Population ~1.1 Billion • 70% in villages, 600,000 villages • 190 million households (urban + rural) • Communications • Lowest tariffs, fastest growth in the world • Low ARPU market • Will cross 200M subscribers in 2007 • 3G delayed due to spectrum issues • Factors • Very high user densities in metros • Very low user densities in rural • Dense fibre optic grid (national network) • Limited reach of wired infrastructure • Wireless – attractive option for broadband • Stringent requirements on future broadband

  3. CEWiT Overview • Centre for Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT) • An initiative of the Government of India • Ministry of Communications and Information Technology • Set up in 2004 - a public-private partnership • Between the Indian government, industry and academia. • Located in Chennai to leverage synergy with wireless R&D at IITM • 2004-06 - CEWiT studying emerging broadband wireless technologies • Focus on the market requirements of India • Downloadable from CEWiT website: www.cewit.org.in • CEWiT has started a number of key research activities in OFDM • IEEE 802.16 d/e (WiMAX), 3GPP-LTE • WiFiRe - a proprietary extension of WiFi MAC for rural applications • Results in the form of patents and publications • Participant in Wireless World Research Forum • Developed a comprehensive simulator for OFDM - BWSim

  4. BWCI • Broadband Wireless Consortium of India (launched March 2007) • India will be a large market by 2010 • Need a national consortium to leverage opportunity to become global player • Involvement of all major stake holders of wireless broadband in India • Operators, Equipment manufacturers, Technology services, semiconductor companies, Indian Govt agencies, academic R&D • Participation in key global standards • IEEE 802.16m, 3GPP, 3GPP2 and IMT Advanced • Develop consensus on requirements of India market requirements • Dissemination of latest information from international standards forums • Develop a HW/SW technology demonstrator • Coordination with Indian government on spectrum issues • Focused research with a view to develop strategic IPR • Facilitate collaboration with international R&D groups

  5. Summary • BWCI – a carefully planned strategic initiative • BWCI vision and activities formulated with • Technology neutrality and commercial focus • BWCI membership – large number of potential participants • Indian operators will play a key role • Launch of BWCI is important from national perspective • Has full support of Government and Industry players • Need to create visibility within India and internationally • BWCI will facilitate India’s entry to global forums – GSC, 3GPP, 3GPP2, … • CEWiT and BWCI to play an active role in generating IPR • BWCI plans are ambitious and aggressive • BWCI’s success can ensure a global presence for India wireless
