  1. Don’t judge my beginnings….judge my actions! Bell-work 11/1/13 Together we will read a short biography about Daniel Morgan, following you will summarize the events in his life that led to his participation in Saratoga. He is an important dude to the American Revolution…pay attention…you’re going to want to meet him! TSWBAT evaluate what turns the tide of war in favor of the Americans EQ: How was the battle of Saratoga a turning point in the war?

British Plan to end the rebellion • Washington’s win at Trenton made the British realize they had to maintain control of NY • British General John Burgoyne came up with a plan to end the patriots rebellion • His goal was to cut New England off from the rest of the colonies by maintain control of New York • No supplies or men could move North from the middle of Southern colonies 

The British Plan • Burgoyne’s plan was to attack Albany, NY from three sides • First from the North, from Canada with 8,000 troops to recapture the Fort Ticond. • From the West, British forces would drive through toward Albany • From the South, General Howe would lead a large army up the Hudson River

  5. 3. #Iscrewedup #oops • Burgoyne heads south from Canada and recaptures Fort Ticonderoga • He moved on toward NY, with supplies running short • In NY, General Horatio Gates (Granny Gates) had 6,000 men waiting for Burgoyne • Burgoyne reaches Saratoga, New York and plans to stay overnight • His men are starving and Burgoyne does not share his food • Burgoyne’s men hear turkeys and leave the camp to hunt • What they actually heard was Daniel Morgan (Patriot) and his turkey call • They were tricked and the Americans easily picked them off • Then they engaged and it became the battle of Saratoga on October 17, 1777. • Burgoyne never reaches Albany..his plan fell through Dang…I failed!

Results of the Battle • The battle of Saratoga marked a MAJOR turning point in the war • This victory ended the British threat to New England • Destroyed British hopes of an easy victory ( not going to be won in 6 months) • It lifted the Patriot’s spirits at a crucial time (when we had been suffering defeats) • Most importantly, it convinced other Europeans that the Americans had a chance at winning • Morgan got credit for the win which made Granny and Benedict angry

Help From Overseas • After Saratoga, France agreed to openly support American Independence because it now appeared we could win! • In February of 1778, France officially formed an alliance with America or a formal agreement to work together with America • France was eager to weaken Britain, even before the war they were secretly supplying money and arms to America • France became the first nation to sign a treaty with the US and also France’s allies in the Netherlands and Spain also went to war with Britain • We now have a NAVY!

  8. Summary • On the bottom of your Cornell Notes: Summarize how Saratoga proved to be a turning point in the war. One paragraph. Make it good, this battle changes everything! • Complete your progress chart for objective E. • Reflection: How do you feel with this unit learning goal so far? What can you do to increase a level?
