Media entertainment & Arts Alliance • The Alliance is the union and professional organisation which covers everyone in the media, entertainment, sports and arts industries. • There are over 22,000 members working in TV, Theatre, radio, film • The union will advocate on a members behalf if there are industrial issues such as: unfair dismissal, OHS issues, pay disputes & workers compensation claims. • Also offers professional development, networking and training for members

  3. training opportunities • There are a number of excellent training opportunities available for screen practitioners in WA - eg: • On April 9 and 10 2011 SAE are running a two day intensive course with renowned film director Bruce Beresford: http://bruceberesford.eventbrite.com/ • For those interested in documentary production FTI offer a certificate IV course that specialises in this genre of filmmaking: http://www.fti.asn.au/learn/vocational/course/documentary

  4. Online film Communities • There are many excellent online film communities including Vimeo & Creative Cow: • Vimeo is a respectful community people who are passionate about filmmaking. Join groups, enter competitions, and receive feedback on your latest work: www.vimeo.com • Creative Cow is a support community for digital video, video editing, and media production professionals in broadcasting, motion graphics, SFX & film: www.creativecow.net

Code of ethics • The Journalists code of ethics was developed as a best practice guideline for Journalists who oftentimes have to make ethically demanding decisions. • The Core Components of the Code are: Honesty, Fairness & Independence. • The Code also advocates respect in the following ways: Disclosure of all facts, no discrimination based on race or sex, do not allow personal opinion affect the story, no plagiarism, do no coerce information from people unfairly, respect peoples grief and privacy, correct any errors.

Safety GuidElines FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY • These Guidelines have been developed to provide practical guidance in the safe execution of productions and events across the entertainment industry. The Guidelines are part of a broad Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) framework for the industry. • For example in Section 4.2 on lighting we read: • Lighting equipment likely to reach high temperature shall be suitably guarded with a clearance maintained from flexible cords to prevent overheating. • • Maximum loads of lighting dimmers shall not be exceeded to avoid overloading and a consequent fire hazard.

  7. Funding Avenues • There are a plethora of funding initiatives available to filmmakers in WA. One Example includes: • Hyperlink is a joint funding venture between FTI and Screenwest for projects up to $70,000. The annual HyperLink scheme assists Western Australian creative Writer/Producer/Director teams to develop their production, storytelling, financial and project management skills to professional industry standards.
