  1. IVF in India

  2. Until a few years back the popular term for IVF, In vitro fertilization, in India was ‘test tube babies’. IVF was known to have ‘made’ test tube babies. As time went by more and more people got aware about this technology. By now a lot of them even opt for the procedure after they face failure to conceive naturally. As the infertility rates in India began to rise, people learnt about the importance of and the science involved in Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), one of which was In vitro fertilization. IVF is a process by which an egg/ovum from a woman is fertilized with a sperm outside of the woman’s body. It involves the stimulation of the ovulation process in a woman which is nothing but the release of an egg. These eggs are then obtained from the woman’s body and fertilized in a laboratory under controlled conditions. The fertilized eggs are allowed to grow to a certain extent and then transferred to the woman’s body for further growth and nourishment. With as many as 1 out 6 Indian couples facing infertility* in recent times, the practice has gained a lot of recognition. If you are one amongst the ones that seek parenthood through IVF it’s only natural for you to have a lot of questions about the prevalence of the technique, its side effects, the costs involved and the best IVF clinics in India. About 40,000 IVF cycles are done in India every year.*

  3. In vitro fertilization cost in India The cost of every IVF technique undergone vary from a couple to a couple. This is because every case is unique on account of the fertility levels of the partners and other medications prescribed to them on the basis of their medical history. The other factor affecting the cost in India is the location. The costs of the procedure differs from one city to another. So a couple based out of Bangalore may end up spending different sums of investment from the couple that undergoes the same in Mumbai, Delhi or Hyderabad. It is because of this very reason that a couple can choose to travel from one place to another in order to fulfill their dream of parenthood. However a couple usually spends anything between the sums of 3 to 5 lakhs when they opt for In vitro fertilization in India. There are usually a few factors that do affect the cost of IVF procedure which are as follows:

  4. 1. The age of a woman and the number of treatments underwent It is a known fact that a woman’s age affects her fertility and the chances of conceiving are usually lower with an increase in age. A woman aged lesser may require lesser number of cycles of IVF to conceive as compared to an older woman. This is important in order to understand so that you are prepared both emotionally and financially before you sign up for the procedure. 2. Donor sperm/egg You may require the involvement of a donor when it comes to sperms and /or eggs. This happens for couples whose fertility rates are very low. A donor sperm can cost up to Rs. 12,000 whereas a donor egg is much more expensive and can range in cost from anywhere between 28,000 to 42,000.* 3. Cost of donor embryos used in IVF Donor embryos are suggested for couples when either one or both of the partners suffer from a condition that can be passed on to the next generation. A donor embryo costs around Rs. 36,000 to 54,000. The donors are usually couples that have successfully completed their IVF cycle. 4. Cost of transfer of frozen embryos A couple can also choose to freeze an embryo which they can choose to transfer at a later date for a variety of reasons. This could usually cost them around Rs. 20,000 to 30,000. Other costs can also include procedures such as T.E.S.A. (Testicular Sperm Aspiration), Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), Freezing Embryos etc. These are performed in some cases.
