  6. The United States, Canada, and Mexico will together host the 2026 World Cup. The games will be played in 16 cities. Currently, there are 23 possible host cities. In this activity you will determine which seven cities should be eliminated as potential host cities.

  7. The final game will be played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey / New York.

  13. DIRECTIONS You will be divided into groups of 5. Each person in each group will be assigned FOUR cities to research for a total of 20 cities. (New Jersey/New York, Toronto, and Mexico City will not be researched as they will be part of the 16 total cities.) The questions on the next slide will need to be answered for each city with the exception of New Jersey/New York, Toronto, and Mexico City. Members of the groups will discuss each of their cities and determine a score together for each category for each city. They will record the score on the Score Sheet handout. Each group will finalize its list and determine which SEVEN cities will be eliminated as host cities.

  14. QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER WHEN DETERMINING THE SCORE FOR EACH CITY • How many hotels / hotel rooms? • How many restaurants? • What are the main tourist attractions? Is this a typical place for tourists to visit? • How do people who visit and live in the city travel around the city? How would people travel to the stadiums? Is there various types of public transportation, e.g., bus, subway, etc. • Does the city have an international airport? How many flights are there in a year? How many travelers? • How long does it take and how expensive it it to travel to the city from: • a. Europe (Paris, London, Moscow, Rome, Frankfurt) • b. Asia (Tokyo, Seoul) • c. Oceania (Sydney) • d. South America (Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Montevideo) • What type of stadium(s) does the city have? How large is the stadium? Does the city have a stadium that has been used for large soccer games? • What is the average summer temperatures and precipitation? What is the cityscape and landscape like? • How popular is soccer in the city? Does the city have any professional or semi-professional soccer teams? • How safe is the city? What is the crime rate? What are the most common crimes that occur around the stadium and tourist attractions?
