  1. OIT Infrastructure and Operations Network Services Update Marc Cougle Sr. Director for IT Operations & Infrastructure Jason Glim Director, Network and Data Center Services

  2. Approach We serve the Rice mission by connecting people, partners and information securely, anytime, anywhere. “We serve the Rice mission by connecting people, partners and information securely, anytime, anywhere.”

  3. First Rule of Networking is we don’t talk about the network • What we have learned • Network • Challenges • Existing & Emerging • Short Term Initiatives • Wireless • Wired • Longer Term Initiatives

  4. What We Learned • Where would you like to see outdoor Wi-Fi installed? • College Commons • Brockstein Exterior Sitting Area • Valhalla Courtyard • Academic Quad / Willy's Statue • Shuttle Buses • Have you experienced poor cellular coverage? • “Duncan College dorms only has 1 bar a lot of the time” • “Service is meh but I use Wi-fi calling a lot so that helps”

  5. Challenges • Legacy Design & Vendor Diversity • IoTGrowth/Residential • Compliance • Bandwidth Consumption Secure Seamless Access Challenges to the Rice IT Network Infrastructure: • Complexity – Multiple distinct segregated systems and legacy designs form an inconsistent foundational framework across the campus, impacting the visibility and transparency in monitoring and management of systems • Security & Compliance – Risks continually arise as the influx of devices and vulnerabilities outpace existing network design and management tools • Usage – Expectations of the capabilities of the network to handle new technology and device count continues to grow exponentially…

  6. Existing Challenges Legacy Design & Vendor Diversity • Visibility into Issues, Stability and Monitoring • Over Three Disparate Primary Network Vendors • Four Firewall Vendors • Aging Wireless Access Points • Cabling Locations and the Remodeling Required • Power Systems Capacity and Inconsistencies

  7. Existing Challenges Compliance and Security Instructional (Classroom) – FERPA Research Computing – NIST 800 171, FISMA Administration – FERPA, HIPPA, GDPR, IP Public Facing – GDPR, ADA Video Surveillance – Chain of Custody Emergency Calls – E911 Credit Card Processing – PCI Entertainment – DMCA

  8. Emerging Challenges IoTGrowth/Residential Use 8

  9. Emerging Challenges Bandwidth Consumption • Rice University Bandwidth • Video usage is consistent with global trends (growing) • >10% of traffic is Netflix • Average daily throughput is 4.5 Gbps to 5.5 Gbps • Peak throughput this quarter was 16.65 Gbps

  10. Existing Challenges Secure Seamless Access • Wireless • Cellular • Wi-Fi • Outdoor Wi-Fi • Campus LTE coverage • Network Segregation (Affinity Groups) • Location based access

  11. Short Term Initiatives Wired (Summer/Fall 2018) • Network Resiliency Assessment • Performed network hardening exercises. • Performed software upgrades campus wide. • Addressed some configurations that could have caused future network instability. • ISE – AccessSecurity solution deployment was completed over the summer. Wireless/WiFi (Summer/Fall 2018) • Upgraded wireless controllers  • Access Point deployment • Over 50 new AP’s in classrooms. • Over 25 new AP’s in the colleges (Support for Comp 140) • Increased the 2.4 GHz footprint across the campus to fill coverage holes. • Network Configuration changes to allow seamless connections for Smart & IoT devices

  12. Long Term Initiatives • Wireless/Wi-Fi • Bigger, better, faster • Outdoor wireless coverage • Framework for future initiatives. e.g. 802.11ax, Wayfinding • RFP (Open Now – Closes January) • Kickoff (Spring 2019) • Install ‘massive’ fiber optic trunk between Mudd Lab and BRC (Spring 2019) • Enables future building entry diversity & more collaboration with our partners • Continue to expand high speed access to cloud and collaborative infrastructure • Deliver residential like experiences • Smart Devices, Amazon Alexa, Google Home, gaming systems) • Explore improvements to Cellular LTE coverage across campus • Implement standardized and simplified network architecture across campus

  13. Closing Questions

  14. Commitment • A consistent approach in delivering best in breed solutions to meet Rice needs, by providing: • resilient systems to deliver applications and data • reliable high bandwidth connection to the Rice community • seamless and secure wired and wireless experience • standard framework for the deployment of new and advanced services • secure and compliant platforms with threat mitigation and data protections

  15. Long Term Initiatives

  16. Longer Term Initiatives
