Chapter 17 Highlights • Canada’s enlarged role in the global arena. • Canadian relations in the Pacific region regarding foreign aid and foreign policies are discussed. • Canada’s changing role in NATO and NORAD. • The issue of nuclear energy and impact of computers complete this period in history.

  3. Learning Goals • 1. Students will read “Recognizing China” on Pg. 417 and answer corresponding questions. • 2. Students will continue to practice short-hand note taking skills • 3. Students will become Members of Canadian Parliament and create their own foreign policies. • VS.

  5. Recognizing China • Turn to Pg. 417 in your textbook • In 1973, Prime Minister Trudeau became the first Canadian Prime Minister to pay an official visit to the People's Republic of China, laying the basis for the enormous subsequent growth in Canada-China relations that continues to this day.

  6. Pacific Rim • Def- Canada’s Asian neighbours across the Pacific, Japan, Korea and Malayasia • HS- Trudeau initiated relations with the Pacific Rim countries so that Canada could “face both ways at once” • What does that mean? • Trudeau visits China in 1973 to establish diplomatic relations and new trade deals. • How might this impact Canadian and US relations? Let’s look ahead first

  7. Where is the Pacific Rim Region?

  8. Why is it Important? • The Pacific Rim Region is a vibrant and dynamic economic and geographic area comprising over 48 percent of world trade, 58 percent of world GDP, and approximately 44 percent of the world’s population. • In terms of investment, trade, and economic development activity, the Pacific Rim Region is the leading area in the world for investment and trade opportunities for the foreseeable future.

Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) • Def- The agency formed in 1968 to coordinate all aid from government sources, religious organizations, and charities. • CIDA’s mission was to provide emergency aid and disaster relief to stricken areas of the world such as food and emergency shelters. • HS- Canada’s aid to Africa, Asia and Latin America expanded under CIDA (Chart on P. 420 lists contributions from 1970-1997)

  10. Sustainable Development • Def- developing a country’s resources while ensuring the resources are available for future generations • HS- by 1985, Canada was spending about 50 percent of its GNP on Foreign Aid • Why would Canada want to do this? (Is it just because we are so friendly ????)

  11. Before we begin… What does Foreign Policy mean?

  12. Foreign Policy • Def- a government's strategy in dealing with other nations.

  13. Become an MP activity • 1. Students will be numbered off 1-5 • 2. Once numbered off get in your groups • 3. You will be given 5 min to come up with as many foreign policies as possible for your specific goal. • 4. After 5 minutes one member of your group will read out the definition of your goal and list off the foreign policies you created as a group. • 5. Everyone gets a peanut 

  14. Goals of Canadian Foreign Policy 1. Promotion of trade and economic growth. 2. Environment. 3. Peace and Security. 4. Canadian Sovereignty. 5. Human Rights and Social Justice. Read the definition before you start!!!

Assignments/Web Search Next Class • Foreign Policy - Read P. 417 “Recognizing China” and answer corresponding questions • Foreign Aid and Development – Perform a web search of current, significant Canadian aid programs, starting with the CIDA Web site noted on P. 419 of the text. Use the CIDA Programs worksheet to record and assess the information, then report the findings. • You will be given the rest of this class and a computer lab period next class to complete all of the above
