  2. Simile: a comparison of two unlike things using “like” or “as” • Example: the sky was as dark as coal. • Metaphor: a direct comparison • Example: the raven is an alarm that crows to mark our death.

  3. Personification: is giving human traits to non-living objects. • Example: The raven stretched his wings to hug the night air. • Hyperbole: an exaggeration • Example: I told you a million times.

  4. Onomatopoeia: words that sound like sounds. • Example: bloop, splash, spray, squirt, drip, drizzle • Alliteration: repetition of the first consonant sound. • Example: The raven rummaged through the red cupboard.

  5. Consonance: repetition of consonant sounds • Example: the pumpkin taped the peppered toilet paper to Piper’s nose. • Assonance: repetition of vowel sounds. • Example: The weak flea jumped from the tree to the black raven.

  6. Internal Rhyme: a rhyme that occurs within the same line • Example: “Ride all the night through fog-smoke white” • End Rhyme: a rhyme that occurs at the end of two or more lines • Example: The fog set in. I couldn’t win. It filled my soul. I paid a heavy toll.

  7. Repetition: the repetition of words used to emphasize • Example: “Who, Who,” said the owl. “Who, Who are you?” he seemed to hoot. Who…Who…
