  1. Tools of Science

  2. Safety Goggles Safety Goggles are used to keep our eyes safe during lab experiments.

  3. Thermometer A thermometer is used to take the temperature (in either Celsius or Fahrenheit)

  4. Beakers Beakers hold solids or liquids that will not release gases when reacted or are unlikely to splatter if stirred or heated.

  5. Beaker tongs Beaker tongs are used to move beakers containing hot liquids

  6. Erlenmeyer flasks Erlenmeyer flasks hold solids or liquids that may release gases during a reaction or that are likely to splatter if stirred or heated.

  7. Graduated Cylinder A graduated cylinder is used to measure volumes of liquids. When measuring, measure at the bottom of the meniscus.

  8. Test Tube Test Tubes are used to measure small amounts of liquids

  9. Test tube holder A test tube holder is useful for holding a test tube which is too hot to handle.

  10. Test tube brushes Test tube brushes are used to clean test tubes and graduated cylinders. Forcing a large brush into a small test tube will often break the tube.

  11. Test tube racks Test tube racks are for holding and organizing test tubes on the laboratory counter. Plastic racks may melt in contact with very hot test tubes.

  12. Funnel A funnel is used to aid in the transfer of liquid from one vessel to another.

  13. Rubber stoppers Rubber stoppers are used to close containers to avoid spillage or contamination. Containers should never be heated when there is a stopper in place.

  14. Triple-Beam Balance The Balance is used to measure the mass of objects.

  15. Microscope A microscope is used to see very small particles that we usually cannot see without magnification.

  16. Microscope Slides and Cover You place items that are very tiny on slides, then cover it so it will not go anywhere before placing it under the lens on a microscope.

  17. Scoopula • A scoopula is used to take things out of a bottle that usually has a small opening at the top.

  18. Forceps (or tweezers) Forceps (or tweezers) are used to pick up small objects.

  19. Petri Dish You use a petri dish to hold small items or they are also used to grow mold and bacteria.

  20. Pipettes A medicine dropper, or pipette, is used to transfer a small volume of liquid (usually less than one mL).

  21. Mortar and Pestle Mortar and Pestle is used to ground up pieces of material into a powder.

  22. Bunsen Burners Bunsen burners are used for the heating of nonvolatile liquids and solids.

  23. Ring Stand with Iron Rings and Wire Gauze • Ringstands are a safe and convenient way to perform reactions that require heating using a Bunsen burner. • Iron rings connect to a ringstand and provide a stable, elevated platform for the reaction. • Wire gauze sits on the iron ring to provide a place to stand a beaker. • On older wire gauze, the white material is asbestos!

  24. Spot plates Spot plates are used when we want to perform many small scale reactions at one time. We will use these many times during the year.

  25. Hot Plates Used to warm items in a beaker or in a pot.
