  1. Remedial, bioactive facades using TiO2 Thin Film coating on Organic coatings SMART COATINGS 2006 Feb 17, 2006 Vijay Anand IEC Coatings Pte Ltd , Singapore

  2. Introduction About my company IEC COATINGS PTE LTD , SINGAPORE • APPLICATORS OF PVDF ( PAINTS ) & POWDERS. So we do only electrostatic spray coating. • WHY DO WE NEED TO COAT ? To prevent corrosion & add beauty.

  3. Introduction Façade cleaning / maintenance

  4. Introduction Façade cleaning / maintenance

  5. Introduction Façade cleaning / maintenance Tower crane, Gondola, Boom Lift, Scaffold etc. Cleaning Robots & Cleaning machines. Cleaning Methods / Equipments Critical Factors Façade cleaning - Budget cost for annual maintenance. Not a fixed budget every year. Façade Design – Simple / Complex ? Manpower / Labour, Work area / space.

  6. Introduction Façade cleaning / maintenance Singapore - Arts Centre

  7. Introduction Façade cleaning / maintenance 7,139 pcs of sunshade panels

  8. Introduction Façade cleaning / maintenance 7,139 pcs of sunshade panels

  9. Introduction Façade cleaning / maintenance • Normal Coating + Regular maintenance • Regular maintenance costs increases periodically. • Facade extrior surface apperance deterioates. Initial Painting Cost $ in millions Maintenence Cost No of years

  10. Remedial Coatings TiO2 - Features • What is Titanium and TiO2 • Titanium is a light, strong, lustrous, corrosion-resistant transition metal with a white-silvery-metallic colour. • Titanium is used in strong light-weight alloys (most notably with iron and aluminium) and its most common compound, titanium dioxide

  11. Remedial Coatings TiO2 - Features • Advantages of TiO2 • Titanium is as strong as steel, but 43% lighter. • 60% heavier than aluminium, but twice as strong. • Applications of TiO2 • In paints, paper, toothpaste, soap, food additives, cosmetics, plastics, cement, gemstones, armour plating, naval ships, spacecraft, missiles , etc

  12. Remedial Coatings Working Principle • Photocatalytic Oxidation / Activity • Photocatalyst (TiO2) facilitates chemical reaction by photo-irradiation without becoming transformed. • TiO2 decrease and eliminates toxic VOC by its oxidative capacity. Photocatalytic Reaction TiO2 + SUN Light = [ OH ] Hydroxyl Radical + O2` Superoxide anion Oxidisation / Decomposition Reaction Toxic VOC + Light + Water + TiO2 = Non Toxic Inorganic Gas + TiO2

  13. Remedial Coatings Working Principle • Super-hydrophilic • TiO2 develops a strong affinity for water rather than repelling it. The water immediately spreads over the entire surface in a thin, uniform film. • Contact Angle • Generally water drops formed on normal surface has a contact angle of 47 ° but results have shown that for TiO2 the contact angle is only 7 °. The above two properties means that surface wetting and rinsing is more uniform. Water slides on the surface it touches and floats away the surface contaminants.

  14. Remedial Coatings Working Principle Clean Building 1 2 Self-Cleaning Cycle 4 Dirt & Oil Hydrophilic Reaction Photo-Catalytic Reaction 3

  15. Remedial Coatings Working Principle PVDF / Powder Coated Facades TiO2 Coated Facades Water Droplets Water Droplets Dust / Oil Dust/Oil/Organics Decomposed and Washed away. Organic materials

  16. Process Application @ Factory PVDF POWDER OVEN OVEN TiO2 Coating Final QC Check

  17. Process Application Working Principle Base Material - Aluminum Conversion Coating 0.1 mils Normal Coating Powder / PVDF 2 mils ~ 4 mils Self Cleaning Coating TiO2 Thin Film 0.2 mils

  18. Lab Simulation Experiment After application of oil. Oil was manually applied. Panel was exposed to atmosphere ( open air ) for few days.

  19. Lab Simulation Experiment After application of water. Normal Panel area : Water droplets are not fully washed away. TiO2Coated area : 90 % of Water droplets are not fully washed away.

  20. QA / QC Checks Further Research The final color should be as required by architect / client. Light Box Color Meter

  21. Further Research QA / QC Checks Gloss should not vary. Adhesion of TiO2 layer should be examined. Gloss / Micron meter Adhesion / Impact Test

  22. Conclusions TiO2 Coating • TiO2 Coating + Self cleaning cycle. • Regular maintenance is ZERO . • Facade surface apperance remains original. Initial Painting Cost $ in millions Maintenence Cost No of years
