  10. Course Offerings • Currently ASA Math offers 2 sets of accelerated courses – Math 040/044 and Math 044/050 • Courses are offered during the day as well as in the evening • Courses are offered 2 days a week for 3 hours each day or 4 days a week for 1hour and 15 minutes each day • A cohort group of students was attempted but did not prove to be beneficial

  11. Instruction • Supplemental instructors were utilized in accelerated classes • In order to teach an accelerated course the instructor must have been a supplemental instructor • Instructors and Supplemental Instructors need to be chosen carefully

  12. Challenges • Financial Aid – Needed to provide a student who fails the 1st 8 weeks course with a 2nd 8 week course in order to meet financial aid requirements • Enrolling the correct students in the course- make sure the students are prepared for the fast pace. Case Manager does an excellent job.

  13. Results • Success Rates • Indicated buy a grade of C or better in the course • Passing two levels of remediation in one term • Retention Based on withdrawal rates • Persistence Students’ performance at the program level

  16. Why We Think it Works… • The ability to focus over eight weeks is better than over sixteen • The fast pace keeps students engaged • Attendance is excellent, they keep up with the work • Students are excited about making progress and reducing their time spent in remedial courses

  17. What We Know For Sure… • Remediation works very well for some students • Support mechanisms are necessary • There is a large demand for accelerated courses (30% of total next Fall) • A certain kind of instructor is required • Open enrollment works • Logistic hurdles need to be dealt with • Financial Aid • What if student isn’t eligible for 2nd 8 weeks but needs to be full time…
