  1. Expenses You Can Claim—and Those You Can't Posted on 29 October 2018 Keeping tabs on one’s expenses is an essential skill if you’re a working holiday maker in Australia. So you may find it interesting to know that you can actually claim cash back for some of your expenses. Backpacks and tax backs Here are some of the basic expenses you may be able to claim for: Work-related expenses like Transportation fees/fuel Work uniforms/clothing Self-education Specific tools, equipment, and products And others Tip: Keep your payslips, receipts, and other expense records for your claims. But don’t expect to get all back. That’s the biggest tax myth—maybe the second biggest—and not just in Australia. And speaking of… No tax backs Here are some expenses you may incur that aren’t refundable: Living expenses (rent, etc.) Personal credit card interest (if you’re using a business credit card in relation to your work, you might be able to get a percentage) Commuting hours - while you can claim on transportation and fuel expenses for business travel, travel from your home to workplace (and back) are not claimable. And others. Australia is the endless summer paradise. And when it comes to taxes, it can be all bright and shiny—but not at all times. Find out more about the expenses that you can claim for. Watch out for Part 2 of our “Expenses You Can Claim” series which will outline the types of work-related expenses you can claim while backpacking your way Down Under. Happy travels!
