  1. Joshua – God is My SalvationChapters 10-12 Old Testament Bible Study True Love Church of Refuge Prophetess Delisa Lindsey March 4, 2009

  2. The Defeat of the Amorites Joshua 10:1-28

  3. Adoni-zedek, King of Jerusalem heard of Joshua’s victory over Ai. He also heard of the newly formed contracted agreement between Israel and Gibeon. This league presented a dangerous front to the inhabitants of Southern Canaan. The city of Gibeon was larger and more prominent than Ai. The men of Gibeon were also mightier than those of Ai. Joshua 10:1-2Gibeon Miraculously Defended

  4. King Adoni-zedek (lord of justice) summoned fourother kings to aid him in defeating the Gibeonites. Hoham, the king of Hebron, Piram, the king of Jarmuth, Japhia, king of Lachish (impregnable), and Debir, king of Eglon were all summoned to join alliance with Adoni-zedek. The kings all gathered themselves together along with all their armies surround Gibeon and war against it. If Satan cannot effectively war against a saint, he will war after the person(s) closest to them. When the enemy comes in like a flood, the Lord will lift up a standard. Misery loves company. The enemy will flaunt himself against a child of God and bring with him as many evil forces as he can to intimidate us, but if God is for us, who shall be against us? They shall gather against you, but not by me, says the Lord. No weapon formed shall ever prosper against the Lord’s Anointed . Joshua 10:3-5

  5. Joshua 10:6-7 • The men of Gibeon ran to Joshua and reported the impending attack of the Amorite kings. Heathen kings in the Old Testament represent demonic powers and principalities. • The Gibeonites begged for Joshua’s army to defend them against the armies dwelling in the mountains (spiritual wickedness in high places). • Joshua responded immediately to the war cry along with his warriors and the mighty men of valor. • Watch how God allows trouble to afflict your enemies. He will cause them to turn to you for their deliverance. Your enemies will become your footstools. In Job’s case, he had to pray for the so-called friends of his who heaped upon themselves God’ s wrath while they tormented him during the testing of his faith.

  6. Joshua 10:8-10 • God encourages Joshua by telling him to resist fear and know that He will deliver these men into his hands. No one will be able to prevail against him. • Equipped with this knowledge, Joshua engaged in an all night march into Gibeon from Gilgal (25 miles), normally a three days journey. See Joshua 9:17 • Joshua whipped the Amorite armies at Gibeon and chased them for miles through three other towns. • As they were running, the Lord cast hailstones from Heaven as they ran through another town, until their death. More enemies died from the stones than Israel’s swords. • God proved that the power to deliver comes from Him. Not by might, not by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord.

  7. Joshua 10:12-14 • Joshua commanded, in the name of the Lord, the sun to stand still upon Gibeon and the Moon to stand still in Ajalon. • The sun and moon obeyed until they were avenged of their adversaries. • The Book of Jasher is considered to be the Book of the Wars of the Lord. Num. 21:14, II Sam. 1:18. This book maintained records of epic proportioned battles. • Elijah commanded a drought in the name of the Lord. We have authority in Jesus name to command and declare God’s will on earth as in Heaven.

  8. Joshua 10:15-20 • Joshua returned to Gilgal where it was told him where the five kings were hiding. There were discovered taking refuge in a cave at Makkedah. • Joshua instructed the men to roll a heavy stone at the entrance of the cave and set guards to watch it. • The remaining men are to continue pursuing their enemies and smite the rearguard of them. Don’t allow them to seek shelter in your cities, he tells them for God has delivered them into your hands. • Joshua and his camp committed a great slaughter of their enemies while a few escaped to fortified cities.

  9. Joshua 10:21-25 • Joshua returns to the cave at Makkedah as the enemies mouths have been stopped against them. The five kings are released from the cave. Joshua called for the captains of the men of war who went with them to put their feet on the necks of the kings. • They did as instructed. • Joshua reveals them that the Lord will perform this same feat to all their enemies as long as they are not afraid or dismayed. They must be strong and of good courage.

  10. Joshua 10:26-28 • Joshua slew the kings and hung them on a tree until evening at which time he ordered the bodies removed and thrown into the cave. They placed heavy stones at the entrance of the cave, as at first. • Joshua continued to pursue those who escaped and destroyed them all. He destroyed his enemies and performed the same to the king in Makkedah as he did in Jericho.

  11. The Destruction of the Southern Alliance Joshua 10: 29-43

  12. Joshua 10:29-30 • Completing his assignment in Makkedah, Joshua and his camp moves into Libnah and fought against it. God gave Joshua complete victory in defeating the inhabitants and the king of Libnah as in the case of Jericho.

  13. Joshua 10:31-32 • Completing his victory in Libnah, Joshua and his camp moves into Lachish, surrounds and fights against it. • In two days, God gave Israel the victory in defeating Lachish.

  14. Joshua 10:33 • Horam, king of Gezer, came up to help Lachish, and they were defeated. • None of his people remained. • Every time we conquer an enemy in our life, we must poise ourselves to fight stronger, more adamant enemies. We can be assured that God is with us to ensure sweet victory each time.

  15. Joshua 10:34-37 • From Lachish, Joshua fought into Eglon, overcoming it in one day. • From Eglon to Hebron, Joshua destroyed it utterly, leaving none remaining.

  16. Joshua 10:38-39 • Returning, Joshua fought against Debir and overcame it. • He left none remaining. • Joshua defeated major coalitions in Canaan within only a few weeks. • Joshua smote all the inhabitants of the hills, valleys, to the south, and on the coast. • God used Israel to administer justice to those heathen nations by exorcising them. • Joshua destroyed all the kings (strongmen) as God commanded him. He returned to Gilgal, victorious and undefeated.

  17. Israel’s Northern Campaign Joshua 11:1-15

  18. Joshua 11:1-5The Northern Alliance • When Jabin, king of Hazor, heard of Joshua’s report, he immediately formed an alliance of the northern kingdoms. These armies were as numerous as the sands of a sea. • They had many horses and chariots. • All these kingdoms gathered at Meron (high place) to fight against Israel.

  19. Joshua 11:6-9The Encouragement for Joshua • God tells Joshua to not be afraid for on the next day at the same time, He will deliver them up before Israel to be slain. • He gives Joshua to strategy to use to win the battle. He tells them to hamstring their horses and burn their chariots. God did not want the Israelites to keep the horse for themselves, He wanted to be their trust, not a horse. • Joshua arose with haste and attacked the northern forces at Merom. They cut the hoofs of the horses and burned the chariots. Then they chased their enemies and smote them until their were none left.

  20. Joshua 11:10-15 • Joshua turns back and heads towards Hazor, the capital of the confederation and destroys their king. The defeat of Hazor was significant in that there was nothing left that breathed. Hazor was the only city Joshua burned out of all in the North he destroyed. • The warriors of Israel took the prey, the loot of these cities. They took the cattle too. • As the Lord commanded Moses, Moses commanded Joshua and Joshua carried out his instructions explicitly.

  21. Summary of Israel’s Conquests Joshua 11:16-12:24

  22. Joshua 11:16-19Areas Conquered by Israel • Joshua conquered all the hills, the highlands north and south of Jerusalem, the south country, the land of Goshen – area leading to Egypt, the plains and the mountains. • He slew the inhabitants and the kings of the heathen nations with the exception of the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon. All else they defeated in battle. • The Lord hardened their hearts that they might come up against Israel that he may destroy them.

  23. Joshua 11:20 • The heathen nations of Canaan hated God and despised His people that He had to literally exterminate them in order for Israel to dwell peaceably in the land. Only the Hivites agreed to serve the Israelites and were spared. • The other nations would have seduced Israel by their spiritual whoredoms and corrupted them. • Whenever God calls us out of places or situations, it behooves us to move speedily, be obedient and separate ourselves that we may be a people set apart for His use.

  24. Joshua 11:21-23 • The Anakims were gigantic people. They were descendants of Anak (Num. 13:28, 33, Joshua 15:13-14). Joshua destroyed the Anakims who dwelt in the mountains along with their cities. There were no Anakims remaining in Israel, only in Gaza, Gath, and Ashdod. • Joshua took all the land they conquered and divided it according to their tribes and the land had rest from war.

  25. Well done thou good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of the Lord. Joshua 11:23 • Joshua established an unprecedented military presence in the land. Heathen nations still occupied portions of the land, but Israel’s presence kept them at bay. • The time would come for the remaining nations to be subdued, but now was the time for resting and building. • Joshua made tremendous conquests in both southern and northern Canaan. After we’ve won spiritual conflicts, we can rest in meditation, prayer, and fellowship with our brethren Sweet rest is knowing you have done all the Lord required you to do.

  26. Kings Conquered by Moses Joshua 12:1-6

  27. Joshua 12:1-6 • On the eastern side of Jordan, Moses and the valiant army of Israelites defeated all the peoples from the Arnon River to the mountain of Hermon, and all the eastern plain. He defeated Sihon, king of the Amorites who dwelled in Heshbon, and the inhabitants from Gilead, the coasts of the Jabbok River where the the Ammonites dwelled. • Moses also defeated Og, king of Bashan who reigned over giants living in the lands of Ashtaroth and Edrei. • He defeated the Geshurites and the Maachathites. • The land was distributed to the 2 ½ tribes on the east of Jordan; the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and half of the tribe of Manasseh.

  28. Kings Conquered by Joshua Joshua 12:7-24

  29. Joshua 12:7-8 • On the west of Jordan, Joshua and the armies of Israel defeated inhabitants from the valley of Lebanon, the mountain of Halak, the surrounding mountains, the valleys, the plains, the springs, and the wilderness. • He utterly destroyed all in the south country, the Hittites, Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

  30. Joshua 12:9-24 • Joshua took 31 cities and their kings. • The kings of Jericho (fragrant place), Ai (heap of ruins), Jerusalem (founded in peace), Hebron (alliance), Jarmuth, Lachish (impregnable), Eglon, Gezer, Debir, Geder, Hormah • (place laid waste), Arad, Libnah (whiteness), Adullam (justice of the people), Makkedah (place of shepherds – given to Judah), Bethel (house of God), Tappuah, Hepher, Aphek (strength), Lasharon, Madon, Hazor (castle), Shimron-meron, Achshaph,Taanach, Megiddo (place of troops), Kedesh, Jokneam, Dor (dwelling), Gilgal (circle), and Tirzah (pleasantness) and their cities were destroyed.

  31. In Conclusion….. • All of these nations were better equipped than Israel. • The wars of Joshua occurred over a period of six – seven years. • The locations are at least dozens of miles apart from each other as Israel traveled on foot to each battle. • Collectively, Israel defeated their enemies to the east, west, north, central, and south. • The careful descriptions of each battle and the names of their kings records these events as historical non-fiction. • Don’t ever forget the battle the Lord has fought for our soul’s salvation. • The principalities were conquered and Israel was free to inherit the promises God made to their forefathers. • All the territory was delivered into the hands of Israel through Joshua’s leadership. They eradicated most of the pagan and heathen practices through the annihilation of their kings. • God sanctified the land for Israel’s inheritance.
