  1. Biodiversity NRC – European CHM Meeting November 2012 National biodiversity CHM andother biodiversity related portals Amor Torre-Marín Rando 5 November 2012 ECNC-European Centre for Nature Conservation As a Consortium Partner of the ETC/BD

  2. Scope • Objective: assess national approaches in relation to biodiversity CHM and other biodiversity related portals • Approach: • Analysis of information provided by portals • No contact with countries • Selection based on own knowledge and internet search – not comprehensive • 1st start – basis for discussion and further development • Native version/English version • Countries: Belgium, Croatia, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Spain and UK

  3. National reviews • Belgium • Belgian Biodiversity Platform: access to primary biodiversity data and biodiversity research information • Data management, networking, training, think-tank • Reference database on biodiversity, invasive species, biodiversity and climate change and other networks • CBD Belgian CHM: information on Belgian actions in the framework of the CBD • Actors, legislation and policy, national biodiversity strategy

  4. National reviews • Croatia (1/2) • Nature protection web portal: site of the Nature Protection Directorate of the Croatian Ministry of Environmental and Nature Protection • Protected areas, endangered species, IAS, ecological networks, sustainable use, legislation, projects and international cooperation • State Institute for Nature Protection: central institution carrying out expert tasks in nature protection • Similar information but in more detail • Keep the Nature Protection Information System: under development; thematic databases

  5. National reviews • Croatia (2/2) • Croatian Environment Agency (CEA): public institution that deals with environmental data • Nature: indicators, databases, reports, publications, projects • Croatian Environmental Portal: built in the style of a CHM • Biodiversity, databases, indicators and cooperation • Provides links to relevant pages in the CEA

  6. National reviews • Finland (1/2) • LUMONET: Finish CHM of the CBD • Biodiversity in Finland, policy and legislation, climate change, genetic resources, indigenous people • Biodiversity.fi: provides up to date research-based information on the status and trends of biodiversity in Finland • More than 100 indicators grouped by categories (trends of the components of biodiversity and drivers)

  7. National reviews • Finland (2/2) • Metsähallitus: state-owned enterprise providing natural resources services • Natural heritage: protected areas, habitats and species, cultural heritage, cooperation and research • GBIF Finland: provides links to the GBIF data about Finland, available through the GBIF data portal • Finish data and data providers, projects and databases

  8. National reviews • France (1/2) • Natural Heritage National Inventory: system established to ensure the restitution in a standardized way of French natural heritage data • Biodiversity, geological heritage, overseas territories, programmes and assessments • Search engine by: species, regions and natural areas • French biodiversity CHM: portal in France supporting the CBD. • Actions undertaken by France in terms of biodiversity, including overseas regions; policy; cooperation

  9. National reviews • France (2/2) • SINP/ONB: Nature and Landscapes Information System (SINP) and Biodiversity National Observatory (ONB) • SINP: increase synergies between actors for the production, processing, use and dissemination of biodiversity data • ONB: monitor status and trends of biodiversity in France through indicators; policy support • GBIF France: French node of the GBIF • Data provision, data portals, projects and initiatives

  10. National reviews • The Netherlands (1/2) • Biodiversity-CHM.NL: Dutch node of the CBD CHM and central portal for communication on Dutch biodiversity policy • Educational products, showcase projects, information for stakeholders, policy and cooperation • Netherlands Environmental Agency (PBL): national institute for strategic policy analysis in the fields of environment, nature and spatial planning • Facts and figures on biodiversity, policy evaluations and models

  11. National reviews • The Netherlands (2/2) • Environmental Compendium: compiles facts and figures about the environment, nature and spatial planning in the Netherlands • Indicator fact sheets with message, figure, explanation and policy relevance • Netherlands Biodiversity Information Facility (NLBIF): Dutch node of the GBIF • Access to biodiversity data, information and know-how in the Netherlands and worldwide

  12. National reviews • Spain • GBIF in Spain: Data form for data request, links to data sources, information on training and capacity building • Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment • Biodiversity conservation, threatened species, protected areas, national inventories, ecological networks, genetic resources • Spanish Inventory of Biodiversity and Natural Heritage (IEPNB): inventories, indicators, reports • Biodiversia: Interactive platform of the IEPNB • Virtual place to enhance public participation and promote public awareness • Fora, chats, groups, wiki, images, videos

  13. National reviews • United Kingdom • National Biodiversity Network: aims to make biological records freely available to everyone • Datasets and data providers, species, sites, designations • Sharing, using and submitting data; tools • UK CHM for biodiversity: designed to streamline access to the tools available and information on UK’s implementation of the CBD • Case studies, ecosystem approach and specific tools • Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC): public body advising on nature conservation • Biodiversity conservation, indicators, habitat and species, protected sites, legislation, research, data sources

  14. Overview of country profiles wish list

  15. Preliminary conclusions • Variety of situations • CHM mainly provides information about the implementation of the CBD in the country • Sometimes information is compiled in one main biodiversity portal (linked to Ministry or governmental agency), others it is available through several portals (duplication) • Native language version/English version • Better synergies and connections could be made • Useful to have access to information via one portal

  16. Thank you for your attention!
