  2. Arbor Week – April 7-13, 2013 Tualatin recognizes the first full week in April as Arbor Week to celebrate the many contributions that trees make to our lives and community. A few of the many benefits of trees include: Purpose of Arbor Week Social Benefits Making our community a more pleasant and appealing place to live, work and play – Trees are comforting to people – Trees help provide a “sense of place” Community Benefits Screening of objectionable views – Increasing Privacy – Reducing glare and reflection – Directing pedestrian traffic – Decreasing auto speeds – Complementing architecture Environmental Benefits Improving the air we breathe – Cooling warm urban areas – Increasing wildlife habitat – Conserving and purifying water – Moderating the effects of the sun, wind and rain Economic Benefits Energy cost reductions – Increased property values – Storm water mitigation (reduction in the amount of polluted runoff or erosion that reaches the public storm water system – Erosion control

Arbor Week – April 7-13, 2013 The Tree City USA designation is awarded by the National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters, US Forest Service, US Conference of Mayors, and the National League of Cities. It is awarded to recognize communities that have proven their commitment to an effective, ongoing community forestry program based on Tree City USA standards. In 2013 Tualatin will celebrate being named a Tree City USA for a 26thconsecutive year. Tree City USA The people of Tualatin have long seen the health of our tree canopy as vital to our sense of well being and as a defining characteristic of our community. A healthy tree canopy touches our lives and provides us many daily benefits.
