Context:

  • 1 Sam/Saul’s reign deals with the STABILISATION of the nation

    • Nation was in turmoil after the time of Judges

  • 2 Sam/David’s reign deals with the EXPANSION of the kingdom

    Characters:

    • David – his rise and reign

      • “a man after God’s own heart” not because of his perfection but because of his imperfections made known and clear – God was able to use David

    Plot overview

    Plot Overview:

    • David’s rise to power (2 Sam 1-4)

    • David’s reign over all Israel (2 Sam 5-24)

    • God blessed obedient people who were lead by an obedient King. (2 Sam 1-10)

    • God judged Israel when the King strayed. (2 Sam 11-24)

    Plot:

    • David crowned king of Judah:

      • Slow start – only king of Judah for 7 ½ years

      • Hebron – central in Judah

    • Civil war:

      • Ishbosheth king over Israel

      • 7 years of civil war

      • David’s kingdom grew stronger and Ishbosheth’s grew weaker

      • Abner – defects

      • Ishbosheth killed

    Plot:

    • United kingdom:

      • Under David – 33 years

      • David anointed king over Israel and Judah

      • Moves to Jerusalem – central

      • Jerusalem became military capital – protection

      • When David brings Ark of the Covenant – Jerusalem becomes religious capital too.

      • David has great success

    • The king strays:

      • Chapter 11 marks the beginning of David’s troubles

      • Bathsheba and Uriah

      • David saw, inquired and then participated

      • Kept it hidden for a year – Nathan exposes him

      • True repentance – Psalm 51

      • Solomon is born – “Jedidiah” – God’s beloved

    The king strays:

    • Even forgiven sin has consequences:

      • Death of his son

      • Tamar, his daughter, was defiled

      • Amnon, his son, was mudered

      • Kingdom divided – Absalom seeks to kill his father and then is killed

    • 2 Sam 12:10-14

      • “killing and murder will continually plague your family” (Msg)

      • Absalom sleeps with David’s concubines and tries to kill David – “evil against you out of your own house”

    Plot:

    • David regains the kingdom:

      • Mourns over Absalom’s death – rebuked

        • 2 Samuel 19

      • The nation is immediately faced with hardship – famine (Gibeonites)

      • Psalm 18/2 Sam 22

      • Takes a census – God didn’t command it

        • Pestilence in the land

        • Sets up an altar – right where Solomon builds the temple

    • The Davidic Covenant:

      • Unconditional covenant

      • Chapter 7

      • David wants to build a temple for God

      • David is a man of war, he cannot build a House for God

      • Solomon is a man of peace – God promises that although David cannot build it, his son will

    • A lasting dynasty/house/kingdom

      • Lineage and the right to rule over Israel

    • A son to build God’s house

      • Even though Solomon made mistakes God made his name great

    Notes:

    • The fact that the writers don’t only tell of David’s successes and wins but also his faults and failures validates scripture

    • Saul’s death:

      • 2 Sam 1 – it is said that the man was lying – trying to gain credit for killing David’s enemy

      • No one killed “God’s anointed”

      • David holds his conviction even with Ishbosheth

      • Its not Goliath but actually Lahmi – 1 Chronicles 20:5

    • Mephibosheth:

      • Only living relative of Jonathan

      • David was faithful to his promise to Jonathan

      • He was lame

      • Invited to the king’s table and given incredible wealth

      • Picture of what Christ has done for us – God has not forgotten His covenant with His people
