  2. Today’s Warm-Up • SchoolHouse Rock- “Body Machine” • Digestive system trivia! • How long is the digestive tract of an adult human? • Your mouth makes how much saliva daily? • The average male human will consume how much food in his lifetime? Approximately 25 to 30 feet (7.5-9 meters) Approximately 1.7 liters (.45 gallons) Approximately 50 tons (100,000 pounds)

  3. Today’s Objectives • Schoolhouse Rock • View digestive system model • Understand how food is digested in the body • Recognize the various parts and functions of the human digestive tract • Complete “hamburger journey” worksheet

  4. The Digestive System • Questions I want to ask Mr. Rasure but have to wait until the end of class to do so… • List of giggle words I need to repeat to myself 50 times… Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Summary of the notes and information learned

  5. The Digestive System

  6. How is food digested? Digestion involves: • Physical breakdown of food into smaller pieces • The physical mixing of food • Movement through the digestive tract • Chemical breakdown of the large molecules of food into smaller molecules • Absorption of those molecules into the body

  7. Describe the digestive system • The digestive tract is a series of hollow organs joined in a tube from the mouth to the anus. Food passes through the digestive tract. • Accessory organs include the liver, gall bladder, and pancreas. Food doesnot pass through these organs.

  8. Identify the organs of the digestive system

  9. Today’s Starter Assignment • Color and label digestive tract worksheet • Use map colors and textbook-Chapter 16; Section 2 • Cut-out and paste intolab-book whencomplete.

  10. Digestive Tract Mouth • Teeth bite off and chew food into a soft pulp that is easy to swallow. • Chewing mixes the food with saliva, from salivary glands in the mouth, to make it moist and easy to swallow.

  11. Digestive Tract Mouth • Enzymes in the saliva begin digestion of food

  12. Digestive Tract Esophagus • The esophagus is a muscular tube connecting the mouth/throat to the stomach • It moves food by waves of muscle contraction called peristalsis.

  13. Digestive Tract Stomach • The stomach has thick muscles in its wall. These contract to mash the food into a watery soup called chyme.

  14. Digestive Tract Stomach • The stomach lining produces strong digestive juices, including acids like HCL that break down and dissolve the food.

  15. Digestive Tract Small Intestine • This part of the digestive tract is narrow, but very long- about 20 feet. • Villi- small finger-like protrusions absorb nutrients

  16. Digestive Tract Small Intestine • The nutrients are broken down small enough to pass through the lining of the small intestine, and into the blood… (absorption).

  17. Digestive Tract Large Intestine • Useful substances, such as spare water and needed minerals, are absorbed through the walls of the large intestine, back into the blood.

  18. Digestive Tract Large Intestine • The remains are formed into brown, semi-solid feces, ready to be removed from the body

  19. Digestive Tract Rectum and Anus • The end of the large intestine, the rectum, stores the feces. • Feces are finally squeezed through a ring of muscle, the anus, and out of the body.

  20. Accessory Organs Pancreas • The pancreas, like the stomach, makes digestive juices called enzymes which help to digest food.

  21. Accessory Organs Gall Bladder • A small bag-like organ under the liver. • It stores a fluid called bile, which is made in the liver. Bile helps digest fats.

  22. Accessory Organs Liver • Your blood carries nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and other products from digestion to the liver.

  23. Accessory Organs Liver • The liver is like a food-processing factory with more than 200 different jobs! It stores some nutrients, changes them from one form to another, and releases them into the blood as needed.

  25. The Digestive System • Questions I want to ask Mr. Rasure but have to wait until the end of class to do so… • List of giggle words I need to repeat to myself 50 times… Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Notes Summary of the notes and information learned

  26. Today’s Assignment/Homework “Chew on This” Worksheet • Complete both sides of the worksheet; be sure to check yourself with the magic number! • Use your notes and textbook for help but do your own work!

  27. Today’s Assignment/Homework The Journey of the Hamburger:from plate to potty • You are a hamburger… or maybe a cheeseburger… with bacon… mmmm… bacon. • Detail your travels through the digestive system from the beginning to the very end. • Use your notes and textbook; needs to be detailed with info about the organs and what they do- approximately 1 full page!

  28. Make it a great day Mustangs!
