  1. ELECTROTECHNICAL DIVISION COUNCIL (ETDC)BUREAU OF INDIAN STANDARDS MANAK BHAWAN, 9 BAHADURSHAH ZAFAR MARGNEW DELHI 110002 STANDARDIZATION ACTIVITIES IN ELECTRICAL, ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

  2. ELECTROTECHNICAL DIVISION COUNCIL (ETDC) &ELECTRONICS AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DIVISION COUNCIL (LITD) • ETDC & LITDC are the apex bodies at the national level on all matters concerning standardization in their respective field . • 2817 standards in diverse areas serving manufacturers, power utilities, consumers, and the government .

  3. ETDC • The scope of ETDC provides for Standardization in the field of electrical power generation, transmission, distribution and utilization equipment, insulating materials , winding wires , measuring and process control instruments and primary and secondary batteries

  4. LITDC Standardization in the field of Electronics & Information Technology

  5. Sectional Committees • Electrotechnology 37 • Electronics and IT 21

  6. COMPOSITION OF BIS COMMITTEES • Manufacturers • Laboratories/R&D institutions • Govt./Regulatory Bodies • Consumer/User Organisations • Industry Associations • Public Sector Units • Consulting firms • Professional Bodies • Academic Institution

  7. HISTORY OF STANDARDIZATION ACTIVITIES • The Electrotechnical Division Council (ETDC) was constituted in 1957. • The first standard in the field of electrotechnology was Safety of Electrical Appliances, IS 302-1 published in 1951. • Electronics and Information Technology Division Council was formed later in 1977

  8. HISTORY OF STANDARDIZATION ACTIVITIES (cotd.) • Initially, assistance was drawn from British Standards while drafting Indian Standards. • Subsequently, assistance was also derived from DIN and VDE standards, especially in the area of switchgears and motors. • Assistance was also derived from ANSI, UL and JIS standards.

  9. HISTORY OF STANDARDIZATION ACTIVITIES (cotd.) • From the early 1980s, ISO/IEC standards started to have greater international recognition • Also, our being a signatory to GATT led to an obligation to adopt ISO/IEC standards. • Being full member of both ISO and IEC facilitated adoption of these standards by BIS • Several Indian standards are now based on ISO/IEC standards.

  10. BIS and International Electrotechnical Commission • Member body of International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) • Interaction with IEC for the development of International standards in the field of electrotechnology . • Participating member on 42 Technical Committees and 35 sub committees of IEC related to electrotechnology, electronics and IT.

  11. International Standards Organization (ISO) • Observer member on: • ISO/TC 117 on Industrial Fans • ISO/TC 43 on measurement of noise level of rotating electrical machinary • ISO/TC 44 on electric welding equipment • ISO/TC 178 for lifts

  12. ISO/IEC JTC 1 – Information Technology • JTC 1 Sub-Committees JTC1/SC 2 Coded character sets JTC1/SC 6 Telecommunications and information exchange JTC1/SC 7 Software and system engineering JTC1/SC 17 Cards and personal identification JTC1/SC 22 Programming languages, their environments and system software interfaces JTC1/SC 23 Digital storage media for information interchange JTC1/SC 24 Computer graphics, image processing and environmental data representation JTC1/SC 25 Interconnection of information technology equipment

  13. ISO/IEC JTC 1 – Information Technology JTC1/SC 27 IT Security techniques JTC1/SC 28 Office equipment JTC1/SC 29 Coding of audio, picture, multimedia and hypermedia information JTC1/SC 31 Automatic identification and data capture techniques JTC1/SC 32 Data management and interchange JTC1/SC 34 Document description and processing languages JTC1/SC 35 User interfaces JTC1/SC 36 Information technology for learning, education and training JTC1/SC 37 Biometrics

  14. HARMONIZATION OF STANDARDS Harmonization of Indian Standards in electrotechnology: • No. of Indian Standards 2817 • Harmonized with ISO/IEC standard • Identical 667 • Technically equivalent 1010 • IT standards brought out by JTC 1 – 1500 • Corresponding IS published – 250(approx)
