  1. Nuclear ChemistryFission and Fusion

  2. Uranium Mining

  3. Fission • An atom of Uranium 235 breaks apart into two smaller atoms, setting off a chain reaction

  4. How does this model Fission? http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=XHitaEy-Xtg

  5. A neutron is fired at an unstable Uranium 235 atom. • This splits the atom into two smaller atoms, releasing neutrons and ENERGY! • The neutrons hit other Uranium atoms, causing them to split apart!

  6. Nuclear Plants • Nuclear plants create electricity in the same way as coal plants. • Heat from the fission process is used to generate steam, turning a turbine. • Nuclear plants use control rods to regulate how many neutrons are available. This speeds up or slows down the fission reaction.

  8. Fusion • To Fuse = to combine • Combining of two or more atoms • A process that occurs in all stars • Provides a LOT of energy, but not currently used on Earth to provide energy

  9. Fusion in the Sun H + H ---------- He + energy

  10. Einstein’s Theory of Relativity Einstein discovered that mass loss in a reaction can be converted into energy E = mc2 E = energy m = mass c = the speed of light

  11. Vocabulary Words to Review • Nuclear Chemistry • Fusion • Hydrogen • Helium • Theory of General Relativity • E=mc2 • Fission • Control Rod • Uranium 235 • Isotope • Neutron
