  2. Rule One: Use apostrophes to express ownership: • This is Grandma’s cookbook. Rule Two: Use apostrophes even if the possessive noun ends in s • This is Chris’s cake. Rule Three: Do not add an s for plurals - All the kittens’ milk was tasty.

  3. Rule Four: Remember that some plural possessive nouns that end in S or Z may need an ES to become plural. • The Lopezes’ house is blue. • The Joneses’ dog is friendly. Rule Five: Plural nouns that do not end in S need to be punctuated as if they were singular. • The children’s choir was cute.

  4. Rule Six: Use apostrophes to make unusual items (numbers, symbols, letters etc.) plural -The gymnast needs 8’s and 9’s to qualify. -Many Ph.D.’s need to write a thesis. -The way he writes his e’s is unusual. -The *’s on the side of his paper are yellow. -The three Shakespeare’s in the essay were spelled three different ways.
