  27. Plural Forms There are a number of ways to make a noun plural in German. eg. Hunde = dogs Katzen = cats Kaninchen = rabbit/s Küchen = cakes (Kuchen = cake) Bücher = books (Buch = book) Kartoffeln = potatoes (Kartoffel = potato)

  28. There are a few guidelines to forming the plural in German. • Most German nouns with one syllable will add –e to form the plural. • eg. Hunde • 2) Nouns which add –n or –en to form the plural are usually feminine. • eg. Katzen • 3) Nouns with the endings -chen, -lein, -el, -en or –erusually don’t change their endings in the plural, although there may be some umlaut changes. • eg. Kaninchen, Vögel

  29. You can find the plural of any noun by looking up a German dictionary and finding the German word. The ending and/or umlaut change is shown by the second thing in the brackets, after the comma. eg. Hund (-(e)s, -e) m dog eg. Katze (-, -n) f cat eg. Kaninchen (-s, - ) nt rabbit eg. Vogel (-s, Vögel) m bird
