  2. Roosevelt's Views on “Civilization” • White nations and producers of industrial goods were “civilized.” • Those who had a lack of Economic development, or who were not white, were not. • Civilized nations had a right to interfere with non-civilized.

  3. Protecting the Open Door • Japan and Russia have territorial disputes. • Roosevelt arbitrated a peace treaty. (And made an economic deal with Japan) • Great White

  4. The Iron Fisted Neighbor • Venezuela owed money to European countries, who blockaded the coast. Roosevelt intervened. • Roosevelt Corollary. • Revolution in Dominican republic. • Platt agreement

  5. The Panama Canal • America bought rights from a French company, wanted more power in the area. • Negotiated agreement with Columbia regarding canal. • Government refused, there was a revolution, which America supported.

  6. Taft’s “Dollar Diplomacy” • Extended America's investments as a form of control. • Revolution in Nicaragua • US intervenes.

  7. Diplomacy and Morality • Woodrow Wilson Intervenes in Latin America. • Refused to recognize Mexico’s new gov. because of illegitimate methods. Nearly got into war with them. • Veracruz

  8. The Iraq War • US intervened in the middle eastdue to alleged possession of nuclear weapons. • 2005 U.S. helps Iraq hold elections • U.S. doesn’t end military involvement until late 2011

  9. Obama’s Foreign Policy • Keep small force in Afghanistan • Negotiate with Iran about nuclear weapons • Limit use of Drones on terrorists • Help Syria get out of dictatorship
