  2. What is Math? • Math can be considered as lots of things, but for now we are going to focus on fractions. • What is a fraction? • Have you seen fractions anywhere outside of school? • Can someone give me an example of a fraction?

  3. Fractions? • Whether you may have seen fractions before or this is completely new to you, we are going to look at what a fraction is and do some practice with fractions so that you can be very sure you know what a fraction is.

  4. What Is A Fraction? • That’s what a fraction is: Parts of a whole. • How do you write a fraction? Part of the whole The whole • The “part of the whole” can also be known as the numerator when you are writing fractions. And “the whole” itself, that’s the denominator.

  7. What Is A Whole? A whole is something that is complete. This is a whole circle because it is completely shaded in.

  11. Fraction Pies 1 6 There is 1 pink box out of 6 whole boxes. So, the fraction for this pie is 1/6.

  18. Your Turn • Now, make your own fraction pie. • Draw a pie and cut it into different pieces. Then shade in how many pieces you will give your friends. • Then, write down the whole, the pieces given away, the fraction given away, and the fraction that is left.
