1. EVALUATION Q4: HOW DID YOU USE NEW MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE CONSTRUCTION RESEARCH AND PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES

2. What is media technology? • Media: Is the plural of medium (middle, centre, intermediary) this is used to transport messages used to communicate. For example, press, radio, television. • Media Technology: Technology and methods used to support human communication over distances in time and space. • New Media Technology: Different forms of electronic communication that are made possible through the use of computer technology in comparison to old media. • Old media examples: Radio, Magazines, Books, Television etc • New media examples: Internet, TV broadcasting, Cinema, Radio

3. Technology • The use of technology was very vital in the production process. Without using any form of technology It would have been impossible to produce quality products. The use of new and advanced media technology had allowed me to produce good quality products.

4. Construction Nikon Camera- Used to capture pictures for Magazine/poster. Used for voiceovers and the recording of my trailer. IMovie- Used to edit my trailer and pitch. Vimeo- Used to upload videos PowerPoint- Used to present my work

5. Construction Wordpress- Used to upload all my work on my blog. Prezi- Used to make my presentations Youtube- Used for the research of songs and trailers Photoshop – Used to edit my posters/magazines Mac Computers- Used for the whole production process.

6. Vimeo- I uploaded all my videos on to vimeo. This is another example of new media technology which benefited me hugely in terms of audience feedback. I had got many views on my videos and comments which supported me. If i had not used this software I would have been unable to access these opportunities. Imovie- This software was very effective and beneficial during the production process. Imovie has varies effective editing which contributed to the success of my trailer. For instance the slow motion technique which I used on the swing. This effect added terror. In addition the sound effects on this software helped me a lot. For instance in the first sequence of the trailer, i used sound effects on Tracy’s voice so it sounded like she was in an empty room alone, whereas Alice and Ryan who were acting as the police (voiceovers) had a sound effect that sounded slightly distance to emphasize that this was a phone call conversation. Construction Mac Computers- The Mac computer was very efficient and reliable and benefited me hugely in both my pre-production and post- production stages. I had the opportunity to store all my work on it. Furthermore it’s fast and easy and also allowed me to access all these excellent software which helped me hugely in the production process. Photoshop- This software benefitted me as I was able to manipulate images in order to produce quality posters and magazines, through effective editing in which Photoshop provides. If I didn’t have photoshop it would be impossible to effectively manipulate those images, therefore making my poster and magazine look unrealistic. Nikon camera- This helped me produce quality products , therefore this technology was very beneficial to me. After experiencing poor quality with the Panasonic camcorder as shown in my first draft of my trailer, I was very pleased with the outcome of the Nikon camera. Wordpress- This was used to upload all my work. I found this website very useful because it allowed me to organise my work and also made my teachers and fellow students to have easier access when assessing my work. I also enjoyed having all my work on my own blog. It was very beneficial as it made me have easier access to it, for instance I can go on my blog on my phone and upload a post. YouTube- This was useful because i was able to explore and analyze different horror trailers as well as songs and sound affects that would be best suited for my trailer. I discovered the song ‘The innocence’ by Deborah Kerr, on YouTube.

8. Research & Planning This website was used to research existing horror movies in order to understand the concept of typical conventions of a horror trailer. I watched the Bay trailer on IMDB and was inspired by the introduction of this trailer, this is where I adopted the emergency phone call conversation however changed it, to make it my own. Youtube allowed me to search for songs that sound childish and scary at the same time. This is where I discovered ‘The innocence’ by Deborah Kerr and I also searched existing horror trailers to give me ideas. As well as using survey Monkey to gain audience feedback, I also used Twitter because it is a very popular social networking site therefore will reach a large amount of people. I used Google for my main search engine. This search engine was very fast and efficient. For Example; I searched to look at narrative theories and film trailers and came up with various useful websites. Survey Monkey helped me a lot in terms of gaining audience feedback and reaching my target audience. I had created a survey for each of my products. I used Wikipedia for some of my institutional research and film trailers. I also used this site when researching Saul Bass. Wordpress allowed me to have access to other blogs. I looked at previous A2 coursework and observed what they did well and what could of included. This helped me to reflect on my work. For instance if there was areas I could improve. When researching my genre, I created a mood board which I did on Photoshop. This helped me to visualise the genre.

Imovie was used to answer the first question which was ‘In what way does your media product develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media’ Using this software allowed me to talk through my presentation when answering this question. This is another software that was beneficial to me it was useful when presenting my work. It makes my work look appealing and organised. Evaluation This software benefitted me because it allowed me to be creative with my presentations. Also allowed me to engage with my audience. Without this I would not of been able to obtain qualitative feedback also a more appealing presentation. I used Vimeo to upload my work which also allowed me to reach a large audience and gain feedback. Vimeo was benefcial as it meant I had an an alternative way apart from youtube. Without it this would be impossible for me to explore other ways of uploading my work. This was used to upload my presentation on, which allowed me to gain more audience feedback. I received lots of views. This was beneficial as I was able to find out what the target audience liked and disliked. Without this I wouldn’t of been able to get the interests of the audience. This was used to present all my work including my evaluation. The benefit of using wordoress was that it allowed me to put all my information online so that everyone can access it.

11. Without The use of new Technology? Youtube –If I had not had the opportunity to use Youtube in my pre-production process. I would have not been able to get a real insight of what makes a good horror trailer, therefore would not have been able to follow or brake conventions as I would not have grasped full understanding of the codes and conventions of a horror, through analyzing existing trailers. I would have also had the disadvantage of not being able to explore different ambient sounds and songs. Therefore would not of come across the song ‘The innocence’ by Deborah Kerr. In addition I would have had to use my imagination and previous experiences of watching horror movies in the production of my trailer. This would have meant that my knowledge would be limited and this would result in my products being of poor quality.

12. I used Twitter to gain audience feedback, this popular social networking site was very beneficial in terms of reaching my target audience. I was able to receive criticisms as well as praises which in turn allowed me to develop my product. In addition if I had not used Twitter my Audience feedback would have been limited. It would of been also hard to reach my target audience. If Twitter did not exist I would of had to make questionnaires and give it to the public. This form of method would not have been useful because there is a high possibility that it would of been thrown away or avoided as people would not of had the patience to write their answers out. Also they would not have been able to access the trailers I produced. Another problem that I would have faced is that I wouldn’t of had the opportunity to reach a mass audience, therefore the results would not have been representative.

13. Google was my main search engine throughout this project, it was beneficial as it was quick, easy, reliable and efficient. If it wasn’t for Google I wouldn’t of been able to access various different sites. Therefore this would have restricted me form gaining information needed in my research and planning which would then in turn result in poor quality products. If I didn’t have the opportunity of accessing Good I would of had to look at other methods to gain information. For example books, the problems I would have encountered if using this method would be reliability. Books could be outdated as media is constantly in rapid change. In addition, searching various different books can be very tedious, especially if what I am looking for is hard to find.

14. IMDB helped me in terms of analyzing existing trailers. I was influenced by the first sequence of the Bay, which I came across it on this website. The issues I would be facing if I did not have access to IMDB is very similar to Youtube. In addition I would have to use my imagination and the imagination of others in the production process as my knowledge would be limited.

15. PowerPoint allowed me to present all my written work it enabled me to display pictures to make my work more appealing to the audience. If I did not use PowerPoint I would of had to use my voice to talk about my work. This would be tedious to the audience which means that they would instantly turn off.

16. Wikipedia was beneficial to me in terms of gaining factual information. For example the research of Saul bass. If i had not had the access to Wikipedia I would of had to use other methods to find information such as books. This would have been tedious compared to Wikipedia which is easy access and quicker.

17. Prezi allowed me to enhance the appearance in my presentation making it more appealing to the audience. Without Prezi my presentations would have been very dull therefore would not bring attention to my target audience which is my aim. The same problems I would have faced is similar to Powerpoint. I would have to communicate with the audience verbally which could be very tedious therefore I would not be able to effectively communicate with the audience.

18. I obtained audience feedback by using survey monkey. This benefitted me as I was able to reach a mass audience therefore I received different range of responses which helped me develop my products. If I did not have Survey monkey I would of had to produce questionnaires to hand out. This would limit my responses, therefore less developments would be made.

19. Conclusion • Overall, in terms of how useful new media technology was in the construction research and planning and evaluation stages it was very helpful and beneficial. • It allowed me to experiment all different types of technologies and also allowed me to engage with all different types of people. • I can now confidently say that I am very skilful when using new media.
