  2. What was Chernobyl? • A nuclear power plant in Ukraine. • April 26, 1986, It set fire. • Radiation was in air. • Worst nuclear disaster.

  3. How did it happen? • Running tests • Unexpected power surge • Explosions set fire to plant

  4. Causes • Inexperienced workers • Faulty Soviet reactor design • All safety was ignored

  5. Effects • Radiation rised about 1 km. • Radiation carried by wind. • Evacuation of over 200,000 people.

  6. Aftermath • High death rate for clean up workers • Thyroid cancer • Infected topsoil, groundwater, and surface water

  7. Casualties • Not completely sure. • Some say 4,000 • Some say up to 500,000 are linked to Chernobyl.
