  4. TASMANIAN AMBULANCE SERVICE In Australia the emergency number is 000. You can call this number from any phone. It is a free call.

  5. TASMANIAN AMBULANCE SERVICE Dial 000. Ask for “Ambulance”.

  6. TASMANIAN AMBULANCE SERVICE Wait for the operator to connect you to the Ambulance Service. The operator may ask you for your suburb and State. Eg. Glenorchy, Tasmania

  7. TASMANIAN AMBULANCE SERVICE What is the exact address of the Emergency? (Eg. 5 John Street, Hobart) • If the accident is at home, tell the person on the phone where you live • If the accident is not at home try and look for a street name or building name so the person on the phone knows where you are.

  8. TASMANIAN AMBULANCE SERVICE What is the phone number you are calling from? • If the accident is at home, tell the person on the phone your home number. • If the accident is not at home, tell the person the phone number where you are.

  9. TASMANIAN AMBULANCE SERVICE What is the problem, tell me exactly what happened? Tell the person on the phone who is sick or hurt and what happened to them.

  10. TASMANIAN AMBULANCE SERVICE How old is he? (How old is she?)

  11. TASMANIAN AMBULANCE SERVICE Is she conscious? (Is he conscious) This question is difficult. It means ‘can you wake the sick person up?’ Are they awake? If they can’t wake up, you must tell the person on the phone.

  12. TASMANIAN AMBULANCE SERVICE Is she breathing? (Is he breathing?) How do you know if someone is breathing? Is their chest moving up and down? Can you hear air coming out of their mouth?

  13. TASMANIAN AMBULANCE SERVICE Don’t hang up the phone! Stay calm! The person you speak to will help you until the Ambulance arrives.

  14. TASMANIAN AMBULANCE SERVICE Interpreters When the Ambulance arrives, tell them your language and they can arrange for a phone interpreter or an interpreter to meet you at the hospital if you need one.
