  2. Early Life • Born in Hollidaysburg, PA on January 18,1858 • Graduated Chicago Medical College 1883 • Wife Alice Johnson

  3. Surgeon • Organized the first black hospital, Provident Hospital • 1893- Performed first successful closure of a wound of the heart and pericardium • President Cleveland appointed him surgeon in chief of Freedmen’s Hospital in Washington D.C

  4. Professor • Provided and organized a training school for African American nurses • 1899-1931- Was a professor of clinical surgery at Meharry Medical College, Nashville, TN
