  5. I. Formation of Metamorphic Rocks

  6. a. Metamorphic Rocks • Can form from igneous, sedimentary, or other metamorphic rocks • The form of the rock and/or the composition of the rock can change

  7. Heat and Pressure • Adding heat and pressure can change a rock from it’s parent rock to a new rock. • For example: • shale to slate to phyllite to schist to gneiss • Basalt to schist • Granite to gneiss

  9. Hot Fluids • Water with dissolved elements reacts with minerals in rocks and change the compositions. • Mostly water and carbon dioxide

  10. II. Classifying Metamorphic Rocks

  11. a. Foliated • Foliated rocks form when mineral grains flatten and line up in parallel lines • Example: slate and gneiss

  12. Nonfoliated • No layering occurs and mineral grains do not line up • Example: marble, quartzite
