  1. TOPIC: MY GOAL: GET ON TASK Thurs 11.01.11 MT 09 Compounds of Life! • Iwill practice identifying the Carbon Compounds & learn what Enzymes are. • Look on p.76 in your ISN for help • Which of the following are Proteins OR Carbohydrates? • Sucrose • Lactose • Cellulose • Fructose • Lipase • Endonuclease • Protease • Endopeptidase

  2. ISN page 79 Enzymes act as Catalysts! 1. What are ENZYMES? • A PROTEIN • ACTs as a CATALYST… • which starts & speeds up reactions • BUT not used upin reaction  Enzymes are used over & over again in your body TPX Catalyst Bat – makes the ball come off bat faster! All That Remains – Become the Catalyst Linkin park – The Catalyst - about being a part of speeding up a revolution

  3. Enzymes are Vital to Life! • MAKE LIFE POSSIBLEW/o enzymes, no activity or chemical reactions would take place…Vitamins, minerals, or hormones could do any work w/o enzymes. • MAINTAIN HOMEOSTASIS Because enzymes control METABOLISM = EVERY chemical reaction in body) • LOWER Activation Energy of chem. reac. • Think of it this way: Enzymes are the "labor force" that builds your body just like construction workers are the labor force that builds your house. You may have all the necessary building materials & lumber, but to build a house you need workers or the house will not get built! • In the same way, you may have all the nutrients -- vitamins, proteins, minerals, etc., for your body -- but you still need the enzymes -- a vital element -- to keep the body alive and well. 2. What is the imp. of enzymes?

  4. Activation Energy 3. What is activation energy? 4. Does Activation Energy Raise OR Lower in presence of enzyme? • Activate means to START • Activation Energy (OR Energy of Activation) = AMOUNT OF ENERGY IT TAKES TO START A REACTION • Lowers

  5. For example… • Which guy LOWERS the Activation Energy Which guy would take less “Energy to Activate” the moving of the rock? • The guy who obviously “includes ENZYMES” in his diet? • Or the guy who obviously “does NOT include enzymes” in his diet?

  6. Referring to #4 A and BCatalysed VS Uncatalysed Reactions Which line takes LESS energy? Which line ‘finished 1st’? So, if an enzyme acts as a catalyst, that speeds up chemical reactions, which line shows a catalyzed reaction? Which line is the one you want in your body, so to speak??? Takes MORE Energy W/OUT ENZYME! UNcatalyzed Energy Takes LESS Energy Catalyzed WITH ENZYME! Reaction Progress Over Time

  7. ISN page 79  Text page 56 Enzyme-Substrate Complex How Enzymes Work: • What areENZYMES? • What is theSUBSTRATE? • Where is theACTIVE SITE? • What is the ENZYME- • SUBSTRATE COMPLEX? • What are the PRODUCTS? • What areINHIBITORS? Thing doing the reacting Thing that is being acted on Place where substrate fits into enzyme • ‘Complex’ = made of many connected parts • i.e. the enzyme + the substrate Things that are made Things that get in the way: they change the shape of the active site  drugs, alcohol, genetic disorder, temp., pH

  9. Last Job of the Day • Practice Test reviewing: • Chemical structure • Enzymes • pH • Scientific Process

  10. StopThinkAndReview Did we reach our goal? Our goal today was for you to understand the Enzyme-Substrate Complex… Did you reach that goal? How do you know that you reached the goal? What are you going to do if you did not reach that goal??

  11. Read Chapter 2.4 & 2.5 • MiniSummatie #2 on Monday – Enzymes & Activation Energy HOMEWORK Be the change you wish to see in the world
