  2. Harriet Tubman • Born into slavery in 1822 in Dorchester County, Maryland • She was a civil war nurse, and a civil rights activists • Escaped from slavery on September 17, 1849 • Adopted one daughter named Gertrude • Died from pneumonia March 10, 1913 at age 91

  3. Rosa Parks • Born February 4, 1913 • She was an African American civil rights activist • She was named the first lady by the United States Congress • She was secretary of the NAACP • She died October 24, 2005

  4. Maya Angelou • She was born April 4, 1928 in ST. Louis Missouri • She was known as one of the great voices of contemporary literature • She was a poet, educator, historian, best selling author, and actress • She had written a total of seven autobiographies • Notable works: I knew Why the Caged Bird Sings

  5. Phyllis Wheatley • Born May 8, 1753 in West, Africa • She was an African American poet and first published African American women • She was sold into slavery at the age 7 • She was purchased by the Wheatley family of Boston • She died December 5, 1784 at age 31

  6. Sojourner Truth • She was born in 1797 Swartekill, NY • She was a Domestic servant • She was an African American abolitionist • She was named Isabella Baumfree when she was born • She died November 26, 1883
