  4. Battle of Okinawa • Okinawa= Japan’s last defensive post. • Why was Okinawa a significant island in the war in the Pacific?

  5. Manhattan Project • War Secret • Making of Atomic Bomb. • This could change the face of the war. • What effect might this have on the world at that time and in the future?

  6. 2 offices: • 1 Builds the chemical base. • 2 headed by J. Robert Oppenheimer to build the actual bomb. • Bomb was tested at Alamogordo, New Mexico July 16, 1945. • “The bomb not only worked, but it was more powerful than most had dared hope.”

  7. What to do with this weapon? • A meeting with Interim Committee. • Several concerns: • 1. nothing less than dropping bomb on city would get the Japanese to surrender. • 2. Japanese might shoot down the plane. • 3. the bombs affects were questioned.

  8. The committee thought that it should be dropped on Japan and with no warning.

  10. Truman drops the bomb. • 2 atomic bombs are dropped: • Hiroshima • Nagasaki • August 6th- Little Boy-Hiroshima=important military center. • August 9th- Fat Man- Nagasaki=civilian city

  11. Devastation ends the war • Japan surrendered. • September 2nd a formal surrender ceremony was held.“The skies no longer rain death- the seas bear only commerce-men everywhere walk upright in the sunlight. The entire world is quietly at peace.”
