  2. Where did it originate? • Chinese text from 5,000 years ago. • Soldiers had to pass lifting standards • Ancient Greece • Athletes lifting heavy objects over head • Participating in lifting events • Pre-history • Males competing for dominance • Strength equals power in a tribe/community

What Lifts Are Performed? • Clean & Jerk • Consisted of two lifts • completed immediately after other • from the floor-shoulders • From shoulders-overhead • Coordination needed • Snatch • From floor-full arm's length overhead • athletes bend legs quickly • strength blinding speed needed • One explosive motion • Coordination needed

  4. Equipment needed for lifting • Weights • Barbell (bar holding weight) • Rubber coated cylindrical Weight plates • Collar (secures weights in place) • Lifting Clothes and accessories • One piece suit • Specialized lifting shoes • Weight belt for support • Wrist and knee straps

  5. Do Only Men Compete? • Men and women compete • Different weight classes for both genders • Teenagers compete in size age groups • Senior citizens can compete

How is Olympic Lifting Different from Bodybuilding? • Two main lifts-snatch, Clean and Jerk • power, flexibility, great technique • Participants try for one rep max • Uses barbells in lifts • Weights used to stress muscle • Looks are more important than strength • There are many lifts performed • Bodybuilders use variety of weights Olympic Lifting Body building Zee Govern’atoraraawaw!
