  4. Gothic/Horror Mood • Unusual/Exotic • Cold, Dark and gloomy • Remote, desolate, decay • Eerie and Spooky • Foreboding/Ominous • mysterious • Tense

  5. Heath Manor finally rose into view behind a line of dense, gloomy fir trees. The closer we got, the more it looked like a brooding monster -- battered and bruised, but still menacing. A fierce wind tugged at its broken shutters.

  9. A sudden dark shadow swept across the bright moon, momentarily blocking out its light. Sarah stumbled against a gravestone that was leaning towards the path like a cracked and crooked tooth. An owl gave a ghostly hoot.

  10. The house was dark. As I approached, no one was around and I couldn’t hear many sounds. I wished I wasn’t on my own. The windows had dirty curtains and the glass was cracked in places. An owl flew through a hole in the top window and off into the night. I walked closer.

Compare and Contrast Essay Introduction Hook/introductory sentence Background information + brief summary – what texts will you talk about, character names and what the stories are about Thesis statement – what are you going to try to prove in the compare and contrast Body • Need to follow PEEL – make your point in a topic sentence, explain it provide evidence and then link again to the topic sentence or to the next paragraph • Should have 2 – 3 paragraphs • One paragraph should look at similarities of two texts • One paragraph should look at differences of two texts Conclusion Resay thesis and main points – include character and text names
