  1. InteractiveManufacturing: Virtual Reality and Brain Computer Interfaces in Design and Manufacturing • Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) • BCI's are a direct channel between the brain and external devices. The analysis of the brain behavior is mainly via an electroencephalogram (EEG) due to its fine resolution, easy of use and portability. • VR and BCI in industry • Techniques like VR and BCIs can be widely used in industry in: • Virtual visits & exploration • Training simulation • Robot tele-operation • Creation of personal robots • Man-robot collaboration through BCI Introduction The Human – Computer Interaction (HCI) fieldseekstoperformquality in interaction, adaptability and intelligence in interfaces betweenman and machines, achieving a balance betweenfuncionality and usability in thesystems, focusing in physical, cognitive and afectiveaspects of interaction. • BCI Applications • Accessibility • NeurologicalRehabilitation • Emotionaltherapy • Interactivegaming • Robot control and Tele-operation • Interactivecommunication • Militar applications • Behavioralanalysis(frustration, engagement, boredom, etc.) • There are vision-based HCI, gesture-based HCI, audio-based HCI and touch-based HCI according to the main tools and techniques used, such as facial expression recognition, corporal movements tracking, gesture recognition, voice recognition, speech-based commands, data gloves, multitouch surfaces, calligraphy recognition, etc. • Maintrends in interactivetechnologies • Intelligent and adaptivesurfaces (Multimodal HCI) • Virtual/AugmentedReality • Ubicomp (Web 4.0): Ubiquitouscomputing, pervasive interfaces, ambientintelligence • Virtual Reality (VR) • Computer-generated ambients simulating physical pressence in real or imaginary situations. Generally artefacts such as Head-MountedDisplays (HMD), Data Gloves, Audio/video systems and Sensors (light, distance, etc.) are used. • OtherRelevantApplications • STEM education in K-12 students (Cárdenas & Hernández, 2012): • Adaptive education in K-12 students, a more interactive and engaging way to motivate students to study STEM-related careers. • Space Avatar Mission (space robots tele-control; Cárdenas, Hernández & Mendieta, 2012): • In the future it will be possible to have your own avatar in space and explore the Solar System and more by yourself without ever leaving the Earth, just by using a BCI or a VR interface. • General Applications: • Man-Robot interaction • Adaptiveeducation • Accessibility • Medical/Surgicalassistance • Tracking, positioning and localization • Intelligentvideoconferences • Intelligentgaming • E-Commerce • VR Applications • Highlyimmersiveambients • Training simulation • VR gaming • Virtual communication VR Solar System BCI BCI + Robot Grupo de Investigación de Tecnologías de Información y Mecatrónica Ing.
