monterey desalination water project
Monterey Desalination Water Project
  • Use brackish groundwater from a seawater barrier protecting the Salinas Basin, to create potable water for the peninsula
  • Use vertical and slant wells avoiding open ocean intakes
  • Discharge brines within Ocean Plan regulations because brackish sources are less salty than straight seawater
  • Solve the regulatory and hydraulic problems in the Carmel River, Seaside Groundwater Basin, and Salinas Groundwater Basin
  • Use off-grid power from bio-digested waste from the landfill
project provides significant regional benefits
Project Provides Significant Regional Benefits
  • Restoration of flows to the Carmel River – Steelhead Fish
  • Increased reliability
  • Future ability to address North Monterey County water needs
  • Reduced wastewater discharge to Marine Sanctuary
  • Reduced carbon footprint thru green landfill power
  • Immediate construction to aid economic stimulus
