About Jerry Uelsmann • Jerry Uelsmann was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1934. He is still currently alive. • Jerry found himself interested in photography at the age of 14. • Jerry’s work is found in museums in Tennessee, Massachusetts, Texas, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, and many more places. • He was inspired by school instructors named Minor White and Ralph Hattersley. • His photos are knows for never being taken with digital cameras. He felt that his creative process was more suited to the darkroom. • The majority of his photos are taken in black and white. Dark lighting.
Meditation Mystery • Name: Meditation Mystery • Taken in 2001. • He used 3 different pictures and put them together. The clouds, water, and the latter and fused them together. • I chose this of many photos cause it shows how amazing something so simple can be. • This photo doesn’t represent anything specific but you can use your imagination and it could represent a lot of things. • For me, I can see the latter as being a pathway to heaven from the dark world. • One thing I noticed about his photos is the black and white makes it look like a very serious photo and it puts you in a serious mood. • The main subject of the photo is definitely the latter.. It doesn’t really fit with the rest of the photo and that’s one of the questions about it.
Untitled. (Boat under waterfall) • Name: Untitled • Taken in 1997. • Again, Jerry fused 3 pictures together to create this almost abstract looking piece. It looks as if the boat is floating above the water line with the shadow under the boat. • This photo was sold for $6,000. • This is a black and white photo • It has good rule of thirds. The boat is in the bottom middle and catches the viewers attention immediately. • The main subject in this photo, in my opinion, would definitely be the boat. It’s the most different from the rest of the photo. • I chose this photo because it’s so simple but amazing to look at. • The lines all do gown in the water so there are plenty of lines then the boat is the pattern breaking attention grabber.
Untitled. (Boat in Hands). • Name: Untitled (boat in hands.) • Created in 1996. • This photo too was once separate photos fused together. All using negatives and enlargers. • This photo is so clean and clear. The person is holding water in their hands with water and thick white clouds. • This photo makes me think the person may be older because of the wrinkles in the hands and what they’re holding on to might be a memory. The wrinkles could represent age. • I’m not sure what the main subject would be. There’s a few interesting things in this photo to look at. Might be the hands, or it could be the little boat inside of them. • This photo has good rule of thirds. You can see the line of the horizon where the water meets the clouds. • I chose this photo, again, because of its beautiful simplicity.
Untitled. (Puddle in Hands). • Name: Untitled. • Made in 2003 • This photo was sold for $6,000. • This photo doesn’t have much information on it but it definitely one of Jerry’s most well know pieces of work. • The picture could represent anything. Life with nature and much more. • It follows the rule of thirds really well. Everything in the photo is where it looks like it belongs. If I had taken this photo I wouldn’t have done anything different myself. It’s a simple complex piece of work that fits together perfectly. • It’s a really dark photo because he makes his work in the dark room. • This is a hard photo to tell what the main subject might be. In my opinion it would be the hands because that’s where my eyes travel to first. • I chose this photo out of many others because it’s one of his most famous ones, I also found it very intriguing.
Journey into Night • Name: Journey into Night. • Made in 2006. • Jerry said himself that even he isn’t sure about the meaning of each picture in his work, only when it’s all put together. • It’s a representation of a journey into the night. • Jerry rarely names his work but when he does the title is his small explanation of his picture. • I chose this picture because to me it looks like it could be explaining a lot of different things that he hasn’t said. As though he is leaving it to the viewer to see what catches their attention. • I would think most people would say that the obvious subject would be the egg in the hand, but I think everything fits together from the broken bricks, to the tree, to the hand, and the nest with the egg. • If I were to have made this picture I wouldn’t want anything done different. I like the seriousness of the picture and how it makes you really think to look at it.
Dream Theater • Dream Theatre • Made in 2004. • This photo represents someone looking in a dictionary to find where they’re supposed to go. • This “theatre” is like a life imagining and getting lost. Very cool to think about. • I chose this picture because it has a title. I think when the artist names their work it makes the photo much more meaningful and gives you an idea of what the artist was thinking about when they made this. Giving you their perspective. • If I were the photographer I don’t think I would have done anything different except make the photo more something I can imagine. • I don’t know what the main subject in this photo would be. There’s so many things to look at and interoperate what his mind is thinking. • The angle and rule of thirds looks great to me. I think how everything in in its place looks like how it’s supposed to be.
