  1. LEGACY JUNIOR HIGH CHEER TRY-OUT PARENT INFORMATION MEETING

  2. CHEERLEADING TRYOUT REQUIREMENTS • Cheerleading tryouts are open to students in the 7th and 8th grades at LJH. • 2. For the 3 terms preceding tryouts, cheerleader candidates must achieve a minimum of a 3.0 GPA EACH TERM. A student may NOT have received any F’s during the year. • 3.Students may not ask teachers to change a grade to meet these requirements. • 4.The current cheerleaders may help candidates during clinics only. If a candidate receives private coaching from this year’s squad or any other professional involved in the teaching of clinic or the judging of tryouts, that candidate will be disqualified. • 5.You must attend all classes on the day of tryouts, or you will be disqualified. (Absences for valid, academic reasons must be validated by a teacher.) • 6.Eighth grade students currently on the LJH cheer squad WILL be required to try out for their ninth grade year.

  7. THERE IS NO MINIMUM SKILL LEVEL TO TRY OUT • You do not need to know tumbling or have taken dance all of your life. • You should, however, be aware that the minimum skill on this year’s squad is a back handspring. • Both the tryout dance and cheer have optional tumbling choreographed into them.

  8. COMPONENTS OF TRY-OUT: • RUNNING TUMBLING ON MATS (YOU MAY BE ASKED TO DO ON WOOD) • RALLYING • STANDING TUMBLING ON WOOD • JUMP SERIES TAUGHT AT CLINICS (4 JUMPS 1 KICK) • CHEER TAUGHT AT CLINICS • DANCE TAUGHT AT CLINICS • CALLBACK JUDEGES MAY ASK TO SEE ANY PART OF THE TRY-OUT AGAIN OR REPEATEDLY

  9. WHAT CAN BEEN WORN AT TRY-OUTS? • Clothing for tryouts may consist of: • Any solid colored T-shirt or thick strapped tank (no spaghetti straps) • Cheer shorts/skorts. • No large or baggy basketball shorts. • No large logos will be permitted on tryout clothing. • Shirts must cover the midriff at ALL times, even when arms are up and fully extended. • All hair must be pulled back and completely off the face. • Bows are OK • NO GLITTER is allowed!

  10. JUDGES AND JUDGING • JUDGES ARE FROM OUT OF THE AREA AND HAVE NO KNOWN AFFILIATIONS WITH ANY CONTESTANT OR THEIR FAMILY. • WE AIM TO BE AS IMPARTIAL AND AS FAIR AS POSSIBLE! • JUDGE’S SCORES, GRADES, AND CITIZENSHIP DETERMINE THE SQUAD

  11. WHAT IS THE “JUDGES TREAT?” It is a SMALL treat or drink to give the judges with a cute/catchy slogan on them. WHY DO WE HAVE TO GIVE A TREAT? Try-outs take a substantial amount of time for the judges, and they do not take a break to eat. By providing a small treat, LJH shows we appreciate that the judges have come to spend their evening judging. WILL THE TREAT BE JUDGED? The size and cost of the treat are NOT judged in any way. IS IT A BRIBE? NO! Please DO NOT spend excessive amounts of money believing that if your treat is the “biggest” or the “best,” it will influence the judges scores.
