formation of the atmosphere
Formation of the Atmosphere
  • 5 billion years ago – no atmosphere
  • Volcanic eruptions released gases & UV radiation levels v. high – no life forms.
  • Early atmosphere 5-4.5 billion yrs BP
    • Water vapour 80%
    • Carbon dioxide 12%
    • Sulphur dioxide 7%
    • Nitrogen 1% & other trace gases
  • UV radiation reduced and early organisms used CO2 and released O2 – atmosphere slowly developed that could support plant and animal life.
