  3. I. The Perils of World Trade • U.S. caught between France and Britain • British impressments and USS Chesapeake incident • Embargo Act of 1807- stopped shipment to foreign ports • Non-Intercourse Act- prohibited U.S. trade with Britain and France

  4. II. Confrontation in the West • Expansion created tension with American Indians • Tecumseh and allies attack along Tippecanoe River • Battle of Tippecanoe- Tecumseh and allies defeated

  5. III. Congress Declares War • Americans blamed Britain for the uprising and a cry for war against Britain began • President Madison asked for a declaration of war

  10. Fun Facts • George Washington was deathly afraid of being buried alive. After he died, he wanted to be laid out for three days just to make sure he was really dead. • THE TALLEST president was Lincoln at 6'4"; at 5‘4", Madison was the shortest. • VICE PRESIDENTS were originally the presidential candidates receiving the second-largest number of electoral votes. The Twelfth Amendment, passed in 1804, changed the system so that the electoral college voted separately for president and vice president. The presidential candidate, however, gradually gained power over the nominating convention to choose his own running mate.
