  4. Inform • To give form to • To fill with a certain quality • The media changes the form of our thinking • The media is powerful

  5. How does the media inform us?

  6. Who controls the message? • Media conglomerates • According to Fortune 500, the top five are: 1. 2. News Corporation - FOX News 3. Time Warner 4. CBS Corporation 5. Viacom

  7. These companies have merged over the years to become larger companies • They run ads, sold by people we trust • The companies are run by white men over age 40

  8. Entertain • To make us laugh and to forget our troubles for a while • Questions to ask: • Is something okay because its funny and gets a laugh? • Is it crude? excessively violent? • Does it show “real life”? • Reality shows • Half hour/one hour shows where problems are solved by the end of the segment

  9. Where do we look for happiness?

  10. In the past the church steeple was the tallest construction in the area and it pointed to a higher power. • Since fewer people attend religious services, the world has become our church

  12. 1. Instant Pleasure • do what you want to do • if it feels right, it is good • Party on the weekends and get wasted • Just have a good time • Need to have fun to get away from pressures / problems

  14. Glorifies having sex with multiple partners (promiscuity) • Do it now to enter paradise

  15. Glorifies men using women for their pleasure and then never seeing them again • No respect for women or men

  16. Gang rape • Peeping toms • Brutal rapes and murders

  17. What are some of the effects of casual sexual relations? • Message in the media is that everyone is doing it

  18. Pregnancy and abortion • Despair • Empty relationships • Feelings of self loathing • Fear – alone in the world - devastation and hurt

  27. 5. Conformity • Media says we all need to look the same, to own the same things, and to have the same goals • We believe our life is inferior and inadequate

When we read the word "happiness" in the Bible, it is speaking of something that is self-contained. In other words, you can experience happiness regardless of your circumstances.
