  10. Q1. What has been your involvement with GEOSS AG/BI/EC societal benefit areas? • General: 6. Two in forestry related tasks, two general and two no direct involvement • Agriculture: 12. Seven involved in monitoring (GEO-GLAM or JECAM), one with famine early warning, four are general agriculture. No fisheries • Biodiversity: 16. All have been involved in GEO BON • Ecosystems: 6. One forestry related, one ocean related, one mountain regions, one with climatedata relevant to GEOSS (GEWEX/CEOP), three general

Q2: To what extent do you think that GEOSS targets and outcomes for AG/BI/EC will enable increased use of Earth observations and models to provide information to support these societal benefit areas? • Many interviewees avoided a direct answer • The GEO-GLAM objectives will be important for global agricultural monitoring • Otherwise some spread • Definitely will increase use • I have no idea • I am not sure the targets and outcomes will provide increase use of EO but collaborations ….will be significant • The general impression is supportive that target and outcomes will enable increased use of EO but not in 2015 and not without better funding model • GEO BON people appear clearest on this

Q3: What, based on your experience, are the three most important accomplishments of GEOSS AG/BI/EC to date? • Establishment of initiatives like GEO BON, GEO-GLAM, JECAM • Implementation plans for initiatives, particulrly GEO BON • Establishment of Communities of Practice • Recognition by G20 (Agriculture), Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD, report on gaps and Essential Biodiversity Variables), GBIF, IUCN, UNEP-WCMC and IPBES • Opened for increased data sharing • Increased national focus with possibilities of funding • Large space agency think more comprehensively • Progress in standards

  13. Q3: What, based on your experience, are the three most important accomplishments of GEOSS AG/BI/EC to date? (2) • We are not aware of any accomplishments except there has been a number of workshops in third-world countries • It is premature to speak about real accomplishments. However, GEOSS has brought awareness to policy makers and bureacrats, particularly in emerging economies

Q4: Based on the strategic targets and outcomes outlined in Appendix A, which of the AG/BI/EC Targets and Outcomes to you think will be achieved by 2015? • General • Many state outcomes may be reached if more funding etc • Several references to GEO-GLAM, GEO BON etc • Many statements like • Outcomes are rather vague, vision statements, ambitions etc • Most outcomes likely to be reached simply because others are already doing or have done this • Given vagueness and lack of bjective criteria success may be reported anyhow • May be reached but not by 2015 • Agriculture • Outcomes 1 and 7 most likely to be reached • Outcome 5 (desertification) will not be reached • Other outcomes receive variable feedback

Q4: Based on the strategic targets and outcomes outlined in Appendix A, which of the AG/BI/EC Targets and Outcomes to you think will be achieved by 2015? • Biodiversity • Many, but generally less than half, key informants find that all outcomes seem likely to be reached • Only outcome 3 receives more than 50% for achievement (Increased information sharing on biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity resources) • One states, though, that the largest gaps will be seen in biodiversity • And one states there is need for change in GEO/GEOSS dynamics • Success depends to large extent on GEO BON, its funding and implementation • Ecosystems • Two key informants say outright that target will not be met • None of the outcomes are expected to be achieved by more than one third of interviewees
