  1. Frozen Planet S1 E3 “Summer” Peter Brooks

  2. Type of Documentary • Mixed • Observational at points

  3. Themes • Summer • Ice • Animals • The Beginning of Life Binary Opposites • Life vs Death • Water vs Land

  4. Narrative structure • Linear (In Order) • MultiStrand • Closed Narrative (All enigmas answered)

  5. Camerawork • Establishing shot of location (Arctic) shows location and gives the viewer something to look at whilst the Narrator informs the audience. It also helps the Narrators description as it can be hard to get the audience to picture what you’re talking about whereas if you show them a physical image, it will be easier for them to follow. • Long shots of flowers and greenery shows that it is summer and lets the audience get more involved with the documentary as they have to figure things out themselves, such as, the seasons. It also anchors what the narrator is talking about as he is talking about summer and is describing the effect that it has on the area which the long shot of the flowers shows (time passing by).

  6. Mise-en-scene • White shows that it is the arctic, this can be used to set the location instead of stating the fact that they’re currently filming in the arctic. This also helps anchor what the narrator is talking about as he is explaining how the arctic changes, melts and freezes over. • Greenery shows that it is summer. It also helps the narrator talk about the summer in the arctic as it is showing the change that has occurred. Greenery is generally associated with summer and not winter. This helps the audience out as instead of boring them with text telling them what season they can figure it out themselves which means the audience are more likely to get involved with the documentary and prevents them from “zoning out”.

  7. Editing • Long cuts to show what the male Polar Bear was doing whilst the Narrator describes it. • Time-lapse of planet earth to show the time passing by and the ice melting. ARCHIVE MATERIAL • Earth Time-lapse showing ice melting GRAPHICS End credits has picture of planet in the background
