Week 2: September 16 – 20-- S4Session Overview… • Read Chapter 4 Yet?... • Look especially at “Balancing whole class, small group, and individual instruction,” including “Three-Part Lessons” (p. 73) • Assignment development and clarification - • Assignment 2 (math & lit) clarification • Group assignment 3: topic and date picks • Mathematical Processes: Problem Solving • Next Class: What’s Coming Up...

  3. P/J Math Week 2 Session 2Into the Details… • “A lesson would normally have three parts.... [whatever] names are used, the lesson still benefits from these parts” (Small, ch. 4, p. 73). • We will be spending some time exploring the 3 – part lesson, with an extended third part (Ontario template) • Assignment 2—Clarification needed • Please find your Course Outline, and go to assignment 2 details... • Delete the statement, “...but it must be unique to the Section Sign-up . . . The better for everyone)”

P/J Math Week 2 Session 2 • Assignment 3 (Group Assignment) • Choosing Topics and Dates • Random Draw (slips in envelopes) • All seven groups should now be formed • One representative of each group up front • These people will draw • First –Random Draw for order in which groups will draw for topic and date • Second- Random Draws for topic and for date • Record on chart • Following slide shows topics (8) and dates (7)

P/J Math Problem Solving:Patterning and Geometry Context • Problem Solving—Small group activity (40 minutes) • Using manipulatives • A Problem! • Go to EDUC 4274 Resources in Franks’ website • http://faculty.nipissingu.ca/dougf/ • Open “North Bay October Workshop Menu 1” • Scroll to p. 8: Pattern Block Families • Pattern Block Families (Three-Part approach) • BEFORE: Read the problem (all 4 bullets) • DURING: Small Group Work • AFTER: Post and discuss as a full class

P/J Math Problem Solving:Patterning and Geometry Context • Pattern Block Families ... continued • Each table group will need: • Bag of pattern blocks (see manipulative bins) • Sheet of chart paper • Marker(s) • You have 20-25 minutes to solve-show all work on paper • Then post your work on board… • We will discuss!
