Defining the Perspective • Common Core State Standards (CCSS) “…define the knowledge and skills students should have within their K-12 education experiences so that they will graduate high school to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing academic college courses and in workforce training programs…” • Adopted in CT in July 2010: full implementation mandated for the 2013-2014 school year • 48/50 states and 4/6 U.S. territories in current compliance: others to follow

  3. What about Preschool-Age Children? • Early Childhood Education Cabinet: a Birth-to-Age 5 Initiative for Connecticut • CT Preschool Curriculum Framework (PCF) • Preschool Assessment Frameworks (PAF) • Prekindergarten Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) in English Language Arts and Math: already aligned with Kindergarten CCSS

  4. 8 Reading Readiness Skills in 25 Words or Less… • Conversation/Family Stories • Recognition/naming letters and their sounds incontext • Concepts of print • Rhyming/Repetition • Matching • Comparisons/Contrasts • Text Connections • Various kinds of reading

  7. 2. Recognition and naming of letters and their sounds in context. (Note: Recognizing and naming ALL upper and lower case letters is now a requirement in the Kindergarten CCSS, and was previously a Pre-K grade level expectation.)

  8. 3. Concepts of Print • Hold book right way up. • Read/Explore left to right. • Turn pages in sequence. • “Study” the pictures. • Know that pictures make up a story. • Know that words make up a story. • Recognize familiar letters and words.

  9. 4. Rhyming and Repetition • What rhymes with “cat”? • Nursery Rhymes • Rhyming Songs • “I spy with my little eye…” • Repetitive stories and poems • “Pretending to read”

  10. 5. Matching • Shapes, pictures, letters • Dominoes, game pieces • Lego pieces • Puzzles and games • Sorting: everyday objects and found objects • Vary the attributes
