  4. Central Idea • Look at your key details • What lesson or big idea can you take away from this event? (The BIG picture; not specific details) Fill in the central idea on your graphic organizer.

  6. Determining the Central Idea • Informative texts have elements that can help you find the central idea. • Titles • Headings/subheadings • A person’s actions and words • Connotations of words (how the word makes you feel)

  7. Collaborative Pairs • Get a partner and decide who will be #1 and who will be #2 • #1 tell #2 one possible central idea and explain why you think it is correct • #2 tell #1 one possible central idea and explain why you think it is correct • Be prepared to share out

  8. As A Group Let’s choose 2 of the central ideas that we brainstormed that we find are central to the article.

  9. The Nitty Gritty ~ Let’s Take a Look • Central Idea #1- How does the author convey that idea to us? • Is it clearly communicated with supporting details? If not, it is not truly a message we should take away. • Look at the text features and the text and see if you can fill in the graphic organizer.

  11. Supporting Details • This is information from the text that supports the central idea. • Let’s take a look……

  12. Grouping 4 Groups: • Group 1- first section • Group 2- second section • Group 3- third section • Group 4- two pictures Review your section~ don’t forget to look at the text features. Fill in supportingdetails. Can you?

  13. Time to Analyze We have supporting details right? But how are they organized in the text? • Were they spread throughout the sections? • How about the pictures? Were they all in one section? Discuss with your partner. Be ready to share out.

  15. Summarizing“And that’s how it all ties together” • Our goal: summarize the article, including 2central ideas and their supporting details. • So far, we have only been looking at 1 central idea at a time. • HOW DO WE COMBINE THEM?

  16. Summarizing is NOT Retelling • Retelling= listing all the ideas exactly how they are organized in the article • Summarizing= grouping similar ideas together to make it easier for people to understand the information.

  17. Summaries Are: • objective- they do not contain your opinion • similar ideas which are grouped together • statements that do not contain specific details

  18. Let’s Practice • #1 summarize to #2 what you did this weekend? • #2 summarize to #1 your favorite teacher

Let’s Summarize • Take a look at your graphic organizers/ charts. • We are going to summarize the information found there. • I have to keep in mind that summaries are objective, so that means that it can’t contain my opinion. • What do you think of my summary? Turn to your partner and discuss. Did I pass?

  20. Your Turn • Read the article Dogs unleash children’s joy of reading with Paws with Patience. • Write a letter to an absent student summarizing what you the article they missed today.
