  1. Plagiarism And why it matters to you **Only copy notes on pages where you see:

  2. What is plagiarism? “transitive senses: to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own : use (another's production) without crediting the sourceintransitive senses: to commit literary theft : present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source” Merriam Webster

  3. In other words: • If you use anyone else’s exact words without giving them credit • If you take anyone’s idea(s) without giving them credit • If you show any pictures, statistics, charts, graphs, etc. without proper citations If you didn’t come up with it yourself, and you don’t say where it came from, it is plagiarism.

  4. So what’s the big deal? Not only is it lazy, it is also illegal. If you plagiarize you will receive a “0” for the assignment. You will also have to re-do the assignment.

  5. Some of the things that you think you know about plagiarism may be wrong. Alive or dead, it does not matter. If it is not your own idea, you must cite your source!! Carnegie Mellon University, Enhancing Education, “Plagiarism and the Web.” http://www.cmu.edu/teaching/resources/plagiarism.html.

  6. Falan Dafa Clearwisdom.net, English version of Minghui.org, http://clearwisdom.net/emh/articles/2002/12/20/29964.html. If you translate or paraphrase something, you must still give a citation.

  7. You may have been told that if you put something into your own words, you need not cite. This is incorrect. The material is still someone else’s idea and requires acknowledgement. Paraphrasing requires a citation.

  8. So now that you know what it is… what can you do to protect yourself?

  9. Cite, Cite, Cite Say where the information is from (even if you paraphrase it). This includes any statistics, pictures, charts, etc. Exception: Common knowledge facts do NOT need to be cited.

  10. Paraphrase Correctly • This is when you put the information in your OWN words. • If you re-arrange the sentence or use a synonym for a word this is NOT paraphrasing. • You should KNOW the information, not just copy it from a source.

  11. Examples of Paraphrasing Original Source: Dr. Anderson and colleagues have shown that playing a lot of violent video games is related to having more aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors (Anderson & Bushman, 2001). Furthermore, playing violent games is also related to children being less willing to be caring and helpful towards their peers. Importantly, research has shown that these effects happen just as much for non-aggressive children as they do for children who already have aggressive tendencies (Anderson et al., under review; Gentile et al., 2004).

  12. Bad Paraphrasing Dr. Anderson and others have shown that playing video games with a lot of violence is related to having more violent thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. It is also related to children being less caring and helpful towards their peers. Mostly, research has shown that this happens just as much for non-violent children as they do for children who already violent.

  13. Good Paraphrasing Research has shown that playing violent video games can in fact affect the attitude and actions of those children who play them. Whether or not these tendencies occur before the game play, as children continue with these games they begin to show more aggression in their thoughts, actions, and attitudes (Anderson & Bushman, 2001; Gentile et al., 2004).

  14. Original Source: If the existence of a signing ape was unsettling for linguists, it was also startling news for animal behaviorists (Davis 26). Student’s Paper: The existence of a signing ape was unsettling for linguists, and was also startling news for animal behaviorists. Identifying Plagiarism Is this plagiarism?

  15. Verdict: Plagiarism The student should have used quotation marks around the words that he copied directly from the original source. Also, there is no parenthetical reference with the page number of the source statement.

  16. Original Source: If the existence of a signing ape was unsettling for linguists, it was also startling news for animal behaviorists (Davis 26). Student’s Paper: The existence of a signing ape unsettled linguists and startled animal behaviorists  (Davis, 26). Identifying plagiarism Is this plagiarism?

  17. Verdict: Plagiarism Even though the writer has cited the source, the writer’s words are not his own. Look at how closely the phrase "unsettled linguists and startled animal behaviorists"  resembles the wording of the source.

  18. Identifying Plagiarism Is this plagiarism? • Original Source: If the existence of a signing ape was unsettling for linguists, it was also startling news for animal behaviorists (Davis 26). • Student’s Paper: If the presence of a sign-language-using chimp was disturbing for scientists  studying language, it was also surprising to scientists studying animal behavior  (Davis, 26).

  19. Verdict: Still Plagiarism Even though the writer has substituted synonyms and cited the  source, the writer is plagiarizing because the source's sentence structure is  unchanged. It is obvious that the writer could not have written his sentence without a copy of the source directly in front of him.

  20. Original Source: If the existence of a signing ape was unsettling for linguists, it was also startling news for animal behaviorists (Davis 26). Student’s Paper: According to Flora Davis, linguists and animal behaviorists were unprepared for  the news that a chimp could communicate with its trainers through sign language  (Davis, 26). Identifying plagiarism Is this plagiarism?

  21. Verdict: Not Plagiarism The student has cited the source, and appropriately paraphrased the original source into his own words.
