  1. & Circuit Protection Circuit Protection for LED AVX Lights The Way

  2. The Power Of LightLighting the way Forward Old Technology Next Generation Technology Current Technology

  3. LED Applications • Architectural lighting • Discrete LED lighting • Display case lighting • Electronic signs • Mass transit lighting and signaling • Theatrical lighting • Traffic signals • Under cabinet lighting • Automotive lighting • Indoor/Outdoor lighting • Laptops/portable displays

  4. What is Driving the Lighting Market to LED and SSL? • Why are LED’s being used in new lighting applications? • Rising cost of energy • Falling cost of technology • LED cost per lumen decreased by 30% over the past year • Government regulations • RoHs (reduction in mercury content impact CFL devices) • Emissions reduction targets • Building performance requirements • Increase in use of lighting controls • Energy efficiency requirements

  5. LED & Circuit Protection • LED light output is directly proportional to the forward current • More Power = brighter lights • More Power = more need for capacitors and LOW LEAKAGE circuit protection equipment • A drive/control circuit must be used to control the LED’s current • More ICs = increased component count • LED’s reverse breakdown voltage usually low (5V to 10V) • The designer must be careful to insure protection of the device • LED’s are ESD sensitive • More opportunities for varistor based product

  6. LED Driver Topologies - Linear T-Guard VC06LC18X500 * NbO or High CV MLCC (Depending on stack voltage) Note: TransGuard operating voltage should be =/> than the LED stack applied voltage

  7. LED Driver Topologies - BUCK NbO or High CV MLCC (Depending on output voltage) T-Guard VC04LC18X500 * NbO or High CV MLCC (Depending on input voltage) Buck, or step-down, voltage converters produce an average output voltage lower than the input source voltage. Note: TransGuard operating voltage should be =/> than the LED stack applied voltage

  8. LED Driver Topologies - BOOST T-Guard VC04LC18X500 * NbO or High CV MLCC (Depending on output voltage) NbO or High CV MLC High Voltahe RMS MOV/MLV Boost, or step-up, converters produce an average output voltage higher than the input source voltage. Two AVX Caps! Note: TransGuard operating voltage should be =/> than the LED stack applied voltage

  9. LED Driver Topologies BUCK / BOOST T-Guard VC04LV18X500 Or VC06AG183R0YAT * C2 NbO or High CV MLCC (Depending on input voltage) NbO or High CV MLCC (Depending on input voltage) • A combination of buck and boost. • Output is inverted, and its magnitude can be less or • greater than the input. Note: TransGuard operating voltage should be =/> than the LED stack applied voltage

  10. High Current/Multiple LEDs TransGuard VC06LC18X500 * 1KV, 222pf HV Ceramic 2220 w flexiterm Oxicap or HiCV HiCV or Oxicap • AVX Solution • 9 AVX Capacitors • 1 Varistor • 1 fuse • multiple connectors! Oxicap or HiCV Note: TransGuard operating voltage should be =/> than the LED stack applied voltage
