  1. What Does God Say About Our Language ?

  2. Definition of Language • Communication of thoughts and feelings through a system of arbitrary signals, such as voice sounds, gestures, or written symbols. • Such a system including its rules for combining its components, such as words • A particular manner of expression: profane language; persuasive language.

  3. Alternative Dictionaries • There are dictionaries for bad words and slang words in our society today • Even a Black cursing preacher on U-Tube • People have little or no regard for God’s laws when it comes to what they say in private or in public or even over the airwaves

  4. People know filthy language is wrong • A new survey conducted by the Pew Research Center showed that 75% of the 1,505 adults polled from March 17-21 would like to see tighter enforcement of government rules on broadcast content, particularly when children are most likely to be watching; 60% want broadcast TV indecency standards extended to cable TV; and 69% want higher fines for media companies.

  5. People know filthy language is wrong • Time Magazine Poll 53 percent of respondents said that they think the FCC should place stricter controls on broadcast-channel shows depicting sex and violence. 68 percent believe the entertainment industry has lost touch with viewers' moral standards. 66 percent said there is too much violence on open-air TV, 58 percent said too much cursing and 50 percent said there is too much sexual content on TV. 49 percent say FCC regulation should be extended to cover basic cable.

  8. Does God Have Anything To Say? • James 3:7-12 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing . My brethren, these things ought not to be so. 11 Does a spring send forth fresh water and bitter from the same opening? 12 Can a fig tree, my brethren, bear olives, or a grapevine bear figs? Thus no spring yields both salt water and fresh.

  9. Their Mouth Is Full Of Cursing • Rom 3:10-14"There is none righteous, no, not one; 11 There is none who understands; There is none who seeks after God. 12 They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one." 13 "Their throat is an open tomb; With their tongues they have practiced deceit"; "The poison of asps is under their lips"; 14 "Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness."

  10. A Persons Religion Can Be Useless • James 1:26 If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one's religion is useless. • James 3:5-6 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity.

  11. We Must Control The Tongue • 1 Peter 3:10-11 "He who would love life And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips from speaking deceit. 11 Let him turn away from evil and do good; Let him seek peace and pursue it.

  12. Our Hearts Condemn Us To God • 1 John 3:18-20 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue , but in deed and in truth. 19 And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. 20 For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.

  13. How We Let Our TongueCause Us To Sin Before God • Using God’s Name In Vain • Ex 20:7 "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain , for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain . • Ps 139:20 For they speak against You wickedly; Your enemies take Your name in vain.

  14. How We Let Our TongueCause Us To Sin Before God • Using our talk to hurt others • Rom 1:29-30 they are whisperers , 30 backbiters, haters of God, • Telling lies or not telling the whole truth • Rev 21:7-8 But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."

  15. How We Let Our TongueCause Us To Sin Before God • Using corrupt speech • Titus 2:7-8 in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.

  16. How We Control Our Tongue To Glorify God To All We Meet • By using care to determine our words • Col 4:5-6 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. 6 Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. • Prov 25:11 A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold In settings of silver.

  17. How We Control Our Tongue To Glorify God To All We Meet • OUR DEMEANOR AND EXPRESSIONS HAVE AN INFLUENCE • Psa. 42:11; 43:5 “Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God”

  18. How We Control Our Tongue To Glorify God To All We Meet • Never rendering evil for evil • 1 Thess 5:15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. • Always put forth the good word • 2 Thess 2:17 comfort your hearts and establish you in every good word and work

  19. People scoff at God’s Word • Gal 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
